In the three years following the reversal of Roe v. Wade, Planned Parenthood has experienced significant changes, particularly in the Las Vegas Valley where it is the largest single provider of abortions.
Earlier this spring, Planned Parenthood closed its only two clinics in the Las Vegas Valley, which were located on West Charleston and East Flamingo.
This restructuring has led to the opening of a new health center in North Las Vegas, which is currently the sole operational clinic in the area as of April.
According to Planned Parenthood officials, these transitions are part of a broader structural reorganization spurred by evolving healthcare policies after the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe.
As part of this reorganization, Southern Nevada has shifted from the Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains (PPRM) jurisdiction to the Mar Monte (PPMM) territory.
This realignment, which encompasses parts of California and Northern Nevada, allows for unified management across the state, providing an advantage as individual states now set their own abortion regulations following the 2022 Supreme Court ruling.
Officials have indicated that while this territorial transition involved closing two clinics, it positions Planned Parenthood for future expansion of services in the Las Vegas Valley.
Greg Salinas from Planned Parenthood noted that the previous jurisdiction, PPRM, includes facilities in states like Colorado and New Mexico, where there has been a surge in clients from states with more restrictive abortion policies post-Roe.
In Nevada, there has been a notable increase in out-of-state patients seeking services, a trend observed approximately 18 months after the Supreme Court’s decision.
A Planned Parenthood document detailing the organizational restructuring indicated that financial requests from patients skyrocketed from $1 million to nearly $10 million in just 18 months since the Dobbs decision.
To meet these demands, PPRM began to deplete its organizational savings, prompting a shift to ensure the long-term sustainability of their operations.
Now that Southern Nevada is under Mar Monte’s oversight, the health organization believes it can better serve the region’s needs, as the previous system stressed resources.
Annie Filkowski, the Senior Director of Advocacy for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, expressed optimism about future operations, revealing plans to open three additional health centers in Southern Nevada soon.
In addition to expanding abortion services, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte is focused on ensuring access to these services for generations to come in Nevada.
With the entirety of the state now under one jurisdiction, the organization is optimizing its policy messaging for upcoming pivotal votes, particularly focusing on Question 6 which will appear on the ballot in 2026.
This measure aims to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, going beyond the current protective measures in place.
Question 6 was initially passed by a majority of Nevada voters in 2024, but since it concerns a constitutional change, it will need to go before voters again in 2026.
Filkowski emphasized the importance of this upcoming vote, stating, “While an abortion ban was not enacted after Roe fell, we want to ensure that it never happens, regardless of who is in office.
That’s why we’re hyper-focused on passing Question 6 in 2026.”
Evaluating the exact impact of the Roe reversal on Planned Parenthood’s demand in the Las Vegas Valley is complicated due to the closure of two clinics and the subsequent opening of the new health center.
However, updates from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains provide insight into the demand levels being experienced locally before the clinic closures.
As Southern Nevada navigates this turbulent landscape, Planned Parenthood’s restructuring and proactive policy strategies are aimed at bolstering access to essential health services in the wake of changing legal frameworks.
