Philadelphia Prepares for Independence Weekend Festivities at the Delaware River Waterfront

Philadelphians are gearing up for an early celebration of Independence Day with the much-anticipated Independence Weekend at the Delaware River Waterfront, taking place from June 27 to June 29.

This festive event promises three nights filled with free entertainment, exciting live music, and a captivating finale of fireworks lighting up the night sky.

Joseph A. Forkin, President & CEO of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We’re kicking off the festivities early with one of the most memorable and meaningful times to be on the Waterfront.”

He emphasized the richness of the experience, whether attendees are dancing to tribute bands, unwinding at Spruce Street Harbor Park, or enjoying a spectacular fireworks display over the skyline.

“It’s a perfect way to start the holiday. This celebration reminds us of what makes summer in Philadelphia so special and we’re proud to offer it free and open to all, ahead of the Independence Day weekend,” Forkin added.

The festivities begin on Friday, June 27, with a lively atmosphere featuring dancing and a live DJ at Spruce Street Harbor Park from 6 to 10 p.m.

An ’80s tribute night will take place in the Summerfest parking lot at 6:30 p.m., setting a nostalgic tone, followed by an “After Work Session” hosted by Shekhinah B at Spruce Street starting at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, a variety of events will occur throughout the waterfront, kicking off with the Liberty Flea at Cherry Street Pier from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The day’s activities include a printmaking workshop in collaboration with Mural Arts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Cosmic Rhythms dance party spanning from 2 to 10 p.m.

As the evening approaches, the Summer Sounds Concert Series will commence at 7:30 p.m., featuring a performance by the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” at RiverRink Summerfest at 8 p.m.

The evening culminates with a spectacular Fireworks on the Waterfront show scheduled for 9:30 p.m., with prime viewing locations available at Summerfest, Cherry Street Pier, and Spruce Street Harbor Park.

Sunday continues the trend of fun-filled activities, with the Liberty Flea making another appearance at Cherry Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Families can enjoy a Family Fun Day at Spruce Street Harbor Park, featuring games, crafts, and activities from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., plus a unique Skate with Characters session from 2 to 4 p.m., allowing attendees to meet Captain Jack Sparrow.

All events during Independence Weekend are free and open to the public, with food and drinks available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure prime viewing spots, indulge in local vendor offerings, and explore the various seasonal attractions lining the Delaware River.

Spruce Street Harbor Park remains a fan favorite, offering an inviting atmosphere filled with food and beverage vendors set against a backdrop of colorful lights, comfortable hammocks, and floating barges, providing ample opportunity for relaxation.

The venue features the “Lazy Hammock” area, equipped with a performance stage, a bar, and a 16-foot video wall, while the Barge area serves local beers and seasonal cocktails.

The Trading Post resembles a classic corner store, showcasing Philly-made snacks and goods alongside a delectable food selection, including Chickie’s & Pete’s, Ay Burrito! by Philly Taco, Philadelphia Tacos, and Frozen Delights.

Just a short stroll away is Summerfest—a vibrant locale evoking a boardwalk experience complete with beach-side carnival games, a rollerblading rink, and numerous seasonal treats.

Visitors to Summerfest can hop onto a ferris wheel, enjoy a double-decker carousel, have fun at mini-golf, bounce in a moon bounce, or try their luck with arcade games, all while enjoying offerings from Skelly’s Amusements, which provides funnel cakes, lemonade, and cotton candy.

Chickie’s & Pete’s will also have a presence here, serving their renowned Crab Fries, boneless wings, fried shrimp, and more, alongside a menu from Philly Taco featuring tacos al pastor, burritos, and birria, with cocktails and brews available at The Lodge Bar on site.

Cherry Street Pier will feature familiar flavors, with options from Philly Tacos and refreshing cold treats from Irv’s Ice Cream, focusing on small-batch, custard-based ice cream crafted from homemade bases and toppings.

Independence Weekend at the Delaware River Waterfront is set to be a highlight of the summer in Philadelphia, uniting locals and visitors in celebration of community, music, and the vibrant spirit of the city.
