SEATTLE — Demonstrators rallied outside Gov. Bob Ferguson’s office in Downtown Seattle on Tuesday to demand action regarding the deportation of Tuan Phan, a Vietnamese migrant with a complex legal history.
Detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents shortly after being released from a Washington state prison where he served over 20 years for first-degree murder and second-degree assault, Phan was initially believed to be headed back to Vietnam.
Instead, he and seven other individuals who had been incarcerated found themselves on a flight redirected to Djibouti in East Africa, far from their expected destination.
Gnoc Phan, Tuan’s wife, spoke out at the protest, revealing the harsh conditions her husband faces in Djibouti.
“My husband is currently on a U.S. Navy base in Djibouti, East Africa,” she said, adding that he is “living in a shipping container in shackles” and awaiting legal proceedings.
The protest started outside the governor’s office but eventually moved into the lobby where attendees chanted, “Bring Tuan home!
