New York City Public Schools Celebrate Last Day of Classes Before Summer Break

Students across the New York City public school system joyfully celebrated the end of the academic year on Thursday, June 26, marking the final day of classes for the 2024-2054 school year.

With cheers and hugs, students are ready to embark on a summer filled with adventures and activities until they return to school in September.

Although this year is just concluding, it’s never too early for families to start planning for the next academic year.

The New York City Department of Education (DOE) has released its academic calendar for the 2025-2026 school year, which outlines important dates and breaks.

Kicking off on Thursday, September 4, 2025, the school year will feature several days off, totaling about two dozen, providing students and staff with breaks throughout the year.

The calendar includes time off for various religious holidays, including Good Friday, Yom Kippur, and Eid al-Fitr, alongside week-long breaks for winter, mid-winter, and spring recesses, which coincide with Christmas and Passover celebrations.

Additionally, the holiday of Diwali has also been officially recognized as a public school holiday.

In addition to religious observances, the school calendar accommodates several commemorative days such as Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Columbus Day), Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and Juneteenth.

Essential dates for parent-teacher conferences for elementary, middle, and high schools are also outlined within the calendar, ensuring parents can stay engaged in their children’s education.

Among the significant dates for the 2025-2026 school year are as follows:

– **September 4, 2025**: First day of school.

– **September 11, 2025**: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary schools and Pre-K Centers.

– **September 18, 2025**: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for middle schools and D75 schools.

– **September 23-24, 2025**: Schools closed for Rosh Hashanah.

– **September 25, 2025**: Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for high schools, K–12, and 6–12 schools.

As October arrives:

– **October 2, 2025**: Schools will be closed for Yom Kippur.

– **October 13, 2025**: Schools closed for Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

– **October 20, 2025**: Schools closed in observance of Diwali.

As spring approaches, schools will be closed for spring recess from **April 2-10**.

Finally, the school year wraps up with the last day of classes on **June 26, 2026**.
