The Oak Cliff Cultural Center (OCCC) has a vibrant lineup of summer events, workshops, and exhibitions that promise to engage and entertain community members.
One of the standout events is the screening of ‘Monstruo de Xibalba’ on June 29, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Kessler Theater.
In collaboration with the Oak Cliff Film Festival, Manuela Irene, and Cine Provincia, OCCC is offering a limited number of tickets for this captivating film.
Those interested in attending can secure tickets by emailing [email protected] with their name and email, emphasizing their interest in the screening.
The film follows the story of Rogelio, an 8-year-old boy who finds himself sent to his nanny’s hometown in the Yucatan jungle for the summer.
With his parents often absent, Rogelio fills his days with tales from ‘The Book of Spirits,’ which ignite his imagination and awaken visions of ghosts.
Among these is the infamous ‘Xibalba Monster,’ a mysterious figure that Rogelio believes to be real, a belief that leads him into a summer adventure filled with self-discovery and a profound perspective on life and death.
In addition to film screenings, OCCC is hosting a Molcajete Class with renowned Chef Maricsa Trejo on July 23, 2025, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the center.
As part of the Mortar and Pestle series, this workshop allows participants to learn the art of making Salsa Encebollada using a traditional molcajete.
Chef Trejo, a James Beard Nominated chef and co-owner of La Casita Bakeshop, will demonstrate proper grinding and mixing techniques for various ingredients.
This interactive class is open to the general public, and all materials will be provided for attendees.
For those looking to refine their culinary skills further, Salsa Classes are also available.
The beginner class takes place on Tuesdays from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m., while an advanced beginner class is held on Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The beginner class welcomes anyone without prior experience, making it a great introduction to salsa making.
In contrast, the advanced beginner class is designed for those looking to enhance their existing skills with more complex techniques, partner work, and musicality.
In the realm of visual arts, OCCC is thrilled to present the exhibition ‘As I Lay It All To Rest’ featuring artist Chantal Lesley from August 1 to September 12, 2025.
The opening reception is scheduled for August 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Lesley, based in Austin, Texas, brings her multicultural background and experiences as a first-generation American to her art, which often explores themes of identity and belonging.
A child of Peruvian and German immigrants, her works address contemporary social and political issues through photography.
Lesley obtained her BFA in Fine Art Photography from Texas State University in 2021 and has exhibited her work across notable venues in Texas and beyond, including the Houston Center for Photography and Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas.
In addition to her exhibitions, Lesley’s impressive profile includes prestigious residencies in locations such as Chicago and Brooklyn, enhancing her already distinguished career.
