Republican Sen. Thom Tillis Declares He Will Not Seek Reelection in 2024

Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina announced on Sunday that he will not seek reelection next year, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

Having served in the Senate for a decade, Tillis has been one of the more notable Republicans to publicly express his concerns about President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” a massive tax and spending legislation.

Tillis has faced considerable backlash from Trump, who criticized him on social media as “a talker and complainer, NOT A DOER!” and threatened to support primary challenges against him in the upcoming electoral cycle.

This past Saturday, Tillis was one of only two Senate Republicans, alongside Rand Paul of Kentucky, who voted against a motion to initiate debate on the controversial policy package.

The senator has been vocal about his objections to the Medicaid provisions in the bill, claiming his state would have to cover over $30 billion in costs if federal funding was lost.

In a statement, Tillis criticized the growing lack of bipartisanship in Washington, asserting that many politicians fail to appreciate how proposed legislation impacts everyday Americans.

He lamented that leaders willing to engage in compromise and independent thought are becoming increasingly rare.

“Too many elected officials are motivated by pure raw politics who really don’t care about the people they promised to represent on the campaign trail,” he expressed.

Despite having previously maintained that he could secure another challenging election in North Carolina, Tillis ultimately decided he could no longer partake in the divisiveness that characterizes the current political environment.

He remarked, “It’s not a hard choice,” referring to his decision between another six years of political strife and spending precious time with his family.

Tillis noted, “As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven’t exactly been excited about running for another term.”

The upcoming election for Tillis’ Senate seat is anticipated to become a fiercely contested race.

Following Tillis’ announcement, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a statement suggesting that his decision is another setback for Republicans as they confront a potential backlash in the midterms that could jeopardize their majority.

The committee emphasized that even Tillis acknowledges the GOP’s Medicaid cuts and increased costs for families are detrimental.

Former Representative Wiley Nickel of North Carolina is currently the only declared Democrat running for Tillis’ seat, positioning himself as a moderate voice against extremism.

Nickel declared that he will not be swayed by interests that he believes prioritize billionaires over working families.

National Democrats, however, are hopeful that former Governor Roy Cooper—who enjoys considerable popularity and name recognition statewide—will enter the race for this newly available seat.

With the political stakes positioned so high, the 2024 Senate race in North Carolina is set to draw significant attention and resources from both parties.
