As the Fourth of July approaches, the Hawaiʻi County Fire Department is reminding residents that firework permits are available for purchase at designated locations until 8 p.m. on July 4th.
Residents can obtain permits and firecrackers at three specific locations: the TNT Tent at Safeway Parking Lot in Hilo, the TNT Tent at Walmart Parking Lot in Kona, and the TNT Tent at Greenhouse Specialist Parking Lot in Keaʻau.
Permit sales commenced on June 30, and each permit costs $25. The permit allows the holder to purchase up to 5,000 individual firecrackers. Only individuals 18 years of age or older can acquire a permit, which is non-transferable and non-refundable. Notably, permits are not required for novelties and paperless firecrackers.
Firecrackers, in compliance with a valid permit, can be set off only during the designated hours of 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on July 4. The Fire Department has also issued a warning against the use of Aerial Luminary Devices—such as Sky Lanterns and Hawaiʻi Lanterns—which are illegal to buy, sell, possess, or set off in the county. Residents in possession of such devices may contact Fireworks Auditor William Aiona via email at [email protected] or by phone at 808-932-2911 to arrange for amnesty disposal.
In a recent news release, the department emphasized several strict prohibitions concerning firework usage.
Firstly, individuals are reminded that it is illegal to remove the powder or pyrotechnic contents from any fireworks. Secondly, throwing fireworks from a vehicle is prohibited. Users must also adhere to specific timeframes and guidelines regarding where they can set off fireworks.
Fireworks are not permitted within 1,000 feet of operating hospitals, nursing homes, animal hospitals, or during services at any church. Additionally, the department noted that it is illegal to sell or give fireworks to minors, and minors are not allowed to handle fireworks unless closely supervised by an adult.
The Fire Department has provided several safety tips for those who choose to celebrate with fireworks this year.
It is advisable to have a water hose or fire extinguisher readily available while setting off fireworks. Additionally, surrounding brush should be moistened beforehand to reduce the risk of fire.
Children playing with fireworks must be under adult supervision at all times, as even small fireworks can inflict serious injuries. Fireworks should be discharged in safe areas, away from dry grass, buildings, and other flammable materials.
Proper disposal of used fireworks is also crucial—residents are encouraged to soak them in water before disposal.
For those looking for alternative celebrations, the county will host public fireworks displays on July 4th. These shows will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. off the barge at Hilo Bay near the Moʻoheau Bandstand and another barge near Huggo’s Restaurant at Oneo Bay.
For further information regarding firework permits and safe usage tips, residents can contact Fireworks Auditor William Aiona by email or phone.
