Critics warn that this action will exacerbate financial pressures on schools that are already facing significant cuts and layoffs due to earlier measures taken by the Department of Education.
The administration’s announcement indicated that funding typically released on July 1 for essential services—including reading and math support, summer and after-school programs, and assistance for migrant students and English learners—will be withheld.
California and Texas, as the two largest states in the nation, are expected to incur the most substantial losses from this funding freeze, but officials across all states are concerned that they will be adversely affected if the funds are not released soon enough.
