Trung Nguyên Legend Cafe Opens First Location in Oregon

Trung Nguyên Legend Cafe, hailed as the most successful cafe brand in Vietnam, is set to open its inaugural location in Oregon this Saturday, August 2.

Located at 8435 SE Powell Boulevard, the cafe will operate daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This opening has been eagerly anticipated since it was first teased earlier this year and signals the brand’s expansion into the United States.

The new 1,800-square-foot space is situated in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood, having previously been a restaurant and billiard hall named Pho Le II.

Owner Brad Tran has already secured a second location in Beaverton, which is anticipated to open in November.

Tran humorously acknowledged the challenges of launching a business in Portland during an interview, noting that this weekend’s opening would serve as a test run to prepare staff for the busy days ahead.

He plans to host a larger grand opening celebration after their initial days of service and anticipates extending operating hours to 9 p.m. once the full kitchen menu is available.

The unique drinks offered by Trung Nguyên Legend Cafe have already garnered significant interest, with items like the Ottoman and Roman ice milk coffee sets attracting customers due to their elegant presentation.

Among the offerings, the Thien Coffee stands out as the business’s signature drink, famously served in a small black pot.

While the cafe is known for its specialty coffee, including a version of kopi luwak, Tran clarified that their coffee beans are now sourced from a factory rather than using civet cats.

Currently, the food menu at the cafe features grab-and-go items such as croissants and cakes, with plans for a more extensive fusion Asian menu to come.

In Tran’s own words, this menu will include favorites like banh mi, pho, and rice platters, adding a new culinary dimension to the cafe experience.

This particular outlet is classified as a Legend “Coffee World,” which is a notch above the standard cafe offerings.

Tran described it as comparable to a Starbucks Reserve, in contrast to the more common E-Coffee locations that utilize lower-grade beans.

With indoor seating capacity for about 60 patrons and outdoor space for approximately 10, the Portland location aims to provide a special experience for its guests.

Currently, there are only two other Trung Nguyên Legend cafes in the U.S., including a popular spot in Los Angeles that opened in 2023 and a newer location in Texas that launched in early June 2025.

Looking ahead, the company plans to continue its expansion both in the United States and China, introducing more coffee enthusiasts to the distinctive flavors and presentations that characterize Vietnamese coffee culture.

Tran emphasizes that Trung Nguyên is already attracting attention within Western markets, differentiating itself from mainstream coffee brands like Starbucks.

As he noted, “Vietnamese coffee’s been getting a lot of traffic in Western culture, especially this brand. The bean is number one rated in Vietnam.”

Finally, coffee lovers in the Portland area can look forward to visiting Trung Nguyên Legend Cafe, located at 8435 SE Powell Boulevard, when it opens on Saturday, August 2, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
