Haunted Burrow Books Brings Spookiness to Capitol Hill Amid Redevelopment Uncertainty

In a lively corner of Capitol Hill, Haunted Burrow Books has set up shop at 430 15th Ave E, creating a unique haven for fans of horror, dark fantasy, sci-fi, and other moody genres. The store, opened by owner and editor Roxanne Guiney, has embraced its eerie theme, welcoming patrons even during a recent power outage that added to the shop’s spooky aura.

Inside the store, a reading group was recently gathered in the back, using tarot cards and electronic candlelight to enhance the atmosphere of mystery and magic.

Haunted Burrow is a retail experiment for Guiney, following the success she found through flea markets and online sales. It showcases a collection of dark-themed literature, contributing to the neighborhood’s eclectic culture, even as the future of the block remains uncertain due to upcoming redevelopment plans.

A larger six-story development is on the horizon for 15th Ave E, approved by the city’s Department of Construction & Inspections earlier in the summer. However, a Hunters Capital representative indicated that actual construction is not likely to begin soon due to rising interest rates, construction costs, and fluctuating rents.

This impending change in the area has made life for small businesses like Haunted Burrow feel particularly fleeting. As the Capitol Hill commercial district continues to evolve, Guiney and her business are making the most of their temporary home.

Their calendar is filled with events, including a Sunday book club, a Thursday night “write in,” and an “after hours” book club scheduled for later in the month. Additionally, the shop is showcasing the work of local photographers and artists, inviting creativity to mesh with literature.

Haunted Burrow is not alone in navigating this ever-changing landscape. Their new neighbor, LOVECITYLOVE, an art cafe, transformed the corner space that used to house the neighborhood convenience store ShopRite for 30 years. LOVECITYLOVE offers a variety of activities ranging from coffee and juice to live music and sewing classes, becoming a vibrant hub of community engagement.

Across the street, the former site of Casita International is being prepared to welcome a new barbershop named Mac & Milo’s, showcasing the neighborhood’s resilience and evolution despite recent losses.

As it stands, Haunted Burrow Books is embracing both the uncertainty of the retail landscape and the thematic charm of its offerings, forging connections with local residents and fellow small businesses during this moment of transition.

For those interested in exploring the darker side of literature, Haunted Burrow Books is a must-visit destination that not only provides a selection of eerie reads but also fosters a sense of community through its diverse events and gatherings.
