U.S. Government Shuts Down Amid Partisan Stalemate Over Funding

The U.S. government officially shut down at midnight on Tuesday, beginning a funding stoppage that is projected to impact various federal agencies and potentially put tens of thousands of federal employees out of work.

This shutdown was the result of a deepening impasse between congressional Democrats and Republicans, who are supported by President Donald Trump, regarding the inclusion of healthcare provisions in any federal funding extension.

On Tuesday night, the Senate rejected a seven-week stopgap funding measure proposed by Republicans in a 55-45 vote. This proposal was the Republican party’s second attempt to keep the government running on the same night, following an earlier bill supported by Democrats also failing to pass. Hours later, the shutdown commenced.
