Actors’ Playhouse Honors Founders with Dedication of Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein Center for the Performing Arts

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre has achieved a significant milestone with the dedication of the Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein Center for the Performing Arts. This tribute pays homage to the founding vision and leadership of the Steins, whose contributions have profoundly impacted the performing arts landscape in South Florida since the company’s inception in 1988.

The dedication ceremony is a fitting way to celebrate the Steins’ enduring legacy, as it inscribes their name within the Miracle Theatre, the home of Actors’ Playhouse that continues to operate under its historic moniker.

For over three decades, Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein have tirelessly advocated for live theatre and cultural accessibility throughout Miami-Dade County. Their commitment has not only fostered generations of artists, families, and playwrights but has also established the Miracle Theatre as a treasured cultural landmark in Coral Gables. It is recognized as a critical institution in Miami-Dade County’s cultural scene and has earned the designation of a Florida Presenting Cultural Organization.

The Steins’ dedication was particularly pivotal in the early 1990s when the historic Miracle Theatre—an integral part of Coral Gables’ Miracle Mile—faced the threat of demolition to make way for large-scale retail development. Demonstrating their unwavering passion, the Steins spearheaded a campaign that ultimately saved this architectural gem from being lost.

Working in collaboration with the City of Coral Gables, they established a groundbreaking public-private partnership that facilitated the acquisition, restoration, and repurposing of the theater into a dedicated venue for the performing arts.

Through their relentless efforts and the success of a $10 million capital campaign driven by Actors’ Playhouse and supported by the community, the 1948 Art Deco movie palace underwent a significant transformation into a vibrant, three-stage performing arts center. When the renovated theatre celebrated its reopening in 1995 with a performance of “Man of La Mancha,” it marked the beginning of a cultural renaissance in downtown Coral Gables.

Today, this neighborhood thrives with over 100 restaurants, retailers, and residences, alongside a museum and art cinema, and more than 150 multinational businesses.

To celebrate the theatre’s 30th anniversary and honor the new naming, Actors’ Playhouse will bring back “Man of La Mancha” to the stage this fall. This event resonates with the Steins’ inspiring belief that ‘no dream is impossible,’ a sentiment that echoes throughout the show’s iconic anthem, ‘The Impossible Dream.’

Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein expressed their pride in working with a community of talented individuals and patrons to effect change through the magic of live theatre. They hope that this honor will motivate future generations to chase their dreams and contribute to a thriving community.

The Miracle Theatre now welcomes over 150,000 patrons each year, firmly establishing itself as a cornerstone of South Florida’s cultural landscape. The naming of the Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein Center for the Performing Arts ensures the Steins’ legacy will inspire audiences, artists, and dreamers for many years to come.

To mark this historic achievement, a Gala Celebration will take place on Saturday, October 4, at the Miracle Theatre. Those interested in tickets or sponsorship opportunities are encouraged to reach out to Jackie Zucker, Actors’ Playhouse Development and Engagement Director, at [email protected].

In a time when arts coverage is diminishing across various platforms, the BroadwayWorld Community invites those with experience or a passion for theatre to join and be a vital voice in celebrating local arts. Together, we can continue to promote and uplift the arts in this digital era.
