Actors’ Playhouse Honors Founders with Dedication Ceremony at Miracle Theatre

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre is celebrating a significant milestone with the dedication of the Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein Center for the Performing Arts. This ceremony honors the founders’ extraordinary vision, leadership, and generosity, marking a pivotal moment in the organization’s history.

Since 1988, Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein have played a vital role in championing the performing arts in South Florida, fostering a love for live theatre among generations of families and artists alike. The Steins’ efforts have solidified the Miracle Theatre’s position as a cherished cultural home in Coral Gables and a major institution within Miami-Dade County.

The dedication acknowledges the Steins’ instrumental role in saving the historic Miracle Theatre during a critical time in the early 1990s. At risk of being sold and demolished to make way for commercial development, the couple spearheaded initiatives to preserve this architectural gem. They facilitated a groundbreaking partnership between Actors’ Playhouse and the City of Coral Gables to acquire, restore, and transform the theatre into a dedicated space for the performing arts.

Their relentless advocacy, combined with a successful $10 million capital campaign backed by a community of supporters, allowed the 1948 Art Deco movie palace to be revitalized into a vibrant, three-stage performing arts center. The theatre’s reopening in 1995 with the production of Man of La Mancha marked the beginning of a cultural renaissance in Coral Gables.

Today, Coral Gables thrives with over 100 restaurants, stores, and art venues, along with more than 150 multinational businesses contributing to the local economy. This fall, Actors’ Playhouse will celebrate its 30th anniversary by bringing Man of La Mancha back to the stage, providing a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of the Steins.

Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein emphasized their commitment to enriching the community through theatre, stating, “It is with sincere pride and privilege that we have worked alongside a community of talented individuals, supporters, and patrons to make a difference through the power of live theatre.” Their passionate belief that “no dream is impossible” echoes through the theatre’s iconic anthem “The Impossible Dream.”

The Miracle Theatre welcomes over 150,000 patrons each year, reinforcing its status as a cornerstone of South Florida’s cultural scene. With the naming of the Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein Center for the Performing Arts, their legacy is ensured to uplift audiences, artists, and dreamers for many generations to come.

A Gala Celebration will take place on Saturday, October 4, at the Miracle Theatre to honor the Steins and reflect on this significant achievement in the company’s journey.
