Alexandria Makes Progress on Controversial Pump Station Amid Community Concerns

The City of Alexandria has announced preliminary developments aimed at reducing the size of its debated waterfront pump station, a move that follows extensive community opposition to flood mitigation efforts planned for Waterfront Park.

On September 3, project officials revealed that they expect to cut the length of the building by approximately 18 to 22 feet.

Additionally, if the building canopy is eliminated from the design entirely, the total structure size could potentially be reduced by around 55 feet.

This announcement comes in response to significant community pushback regarding the $145 million Waterfront Flood Mitigation Project, which involves constructing a two-story pump station in Waterfront Park to help counter chronic flooding issues that typically affect the area surrounding the Torpedo Factory.

Community opposition has played a crucial role in influencing design changes.

A Change.org petition opposing the installation has accumulated more than 800 signatures, with organizers labeling the pump station as “destructive, unnecessary, wasteful, and in violation of public trust,” according to a July report by ALXnow.

Local advocacy groups, including the “Friends of Waterfront Park” and various business associations, have voiced their concerns.
