Brad Guzan, the distinguished goalkeeper for Atlanta United, has confirmed that he will retire following the conclusion of the 2025 MLS season, wrapping up an impressive 21-year professional soccer career.
Guzan joined Atlanta United in 2017, midway through the club’s inaugural season. During his time with the team, he played a pivotal role in guiding them to an MLS Cup victory in 2018 and a U.S. Open Cup championship in 2019.
As he prepares to hang up his gloves, Guzan looks back on a career that spanned over two decades, including 301 regular-season appearances in Major League Soccer (MLS). In a heartfelt message on social media, he reflected, “21 years is a long time. I’m just a kid from Chicago who instantly knew this game was for me. Today, as I prepare to hang up my gloves, I know this journey was never just about me. THANK YOU – TO EVERYONE.”
Before his time with Atlanta United, Guzan spent nine years in the English Premier League, where he showcased his skills for clubs such as Aston Villa and Middlesbrough. His impressive career includes 64 appearances with the U.S. national team, where he celebrated multiple successes including three Gold Cup victories. He represented the USA at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and also served as the starting goalkeeper for the American squad during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Selected as the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2005 after his collegiate career at South Carolina, Guzan began his professional journey with Chivas USA, earning the title of MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2007. Over the course of his career, he participated in 201 Premier League matches from 2008 until 2017.
At Atlanta United, Guzan holds the distinction of being the franchise’s all-time leader in appearances, wins, saves, and shutouts, highlighting his essential role within the team.
In a heartfelt letter shared with his followers and fans, Guzan expressed gratitude toward various individuals who contributed to his journey. He thanked opponents for challenging him, teammates, coaches, medical and support staff, fans, and most importantly, his family.
Guzan took a moment to acknowledge the sacrifices made by his parents, stating, “Mom and Dad, thank you for all of the sacrifices you both made so I could chase my dreams.” He expressed particular appreciation for his wife, who he credits for being a constant supporter throughout his career.
Addressing his children, Guzan shared an uplifting message, saying, “Just know with hard work and determination, all dreams are possible and to never give up!”
As he prepares for retirement, Guzan sincerely thanks the beautiful game of soccer for granting him the opportunity to live his dream. He acknowledged the joy, pain, growth, and cherished memories that came along with his journey in the sport.
