Exciting Live Music Events Coming This Week

As July inches to a close, the summer season continues to bring an array of remarkable live music performances. This week, audiences can look forward to a series of exciting shows featuring a guitar legend, an acclaimed band from the UK, and a local jazz celebration inviting all to join.

First on the list is guitarist Bill Frisell, who will return to the Ardmore Music Hall on August 3. Frisell is no stranger to the venue, having performed here last year. This time, he leads a trio with bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen, promising an evening of dynamic and spontaneous music. Frisell describes this trio as “probably the most flexible, spontaneous group I play with,” highlighting the unpredictability of their performances.

The trio, which has existed in various forms for about 25 years, has been known for their versatile song selection, from collective improvisations to renditions of classic country tunes by legends like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. They even shed a fresh light on the well-known Barbra Streisand ballad “People” from Funny Girl. According to Frisell, the program will change nightly, influenced by factors such as mood, audience, and even what they had for breakfast. Given these elements, attendees can anticipate a memorable concert experience.

Next up is the Vijay Iyer Trio, featuring trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, performing on Thursday at Kennedy Plaza in Atlantic City. Iyer, a composer and pianist known for his innovative contributions to jazz and improvised music over the past thirty years, incorporates the trio format with remarkable results. This special performance is part of the free Chicken Bone Beach Series and will also feature an opening set by the Keith Hollis Quartet, starting at 7 p.m.

On the same night, London-based collective Kokoroko will grace the stage at Union Transfer. Known for their fusion of jazz and afrobeat, Kokoroko has been creating waves with their music ever since their debut album was released in 2022. They have just released a timely second album titled “Tuff Times Never Last” and are set to kick off a monthlong North American tour with their performance in Philadelphia. Dance enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their dancing shoes along for an electrifying night of rhythm and energy.

Also happening this Thursday is Gerald Veasley’s Leo Birthday Bash at South Jazz Kitchen. Celebrating the 70th birthday of the versatile bass guitarist and Philly jazz advocate, the event promises an exciting evening filled with special guests and performances. As a patron of the Unscripted Jazz Series, Veasley will lead the celebration in honor of everyone born under the sign of Leo, making it a special occasion for many.

Completing the week’s lineup is the Steve Weiss Mallet Festival, taking place at Chris’ Jazz Cafe from Thursday through Saturday. This festival, initiated to honor the memory of percussionist and instrument collector Steve Weiss, continues to thrive a decade after his passing. Vibraphonist Tony Miceli will serve as the master of ceremonies, featuring an All-Star Philly Vibe Jam Session on the festival’s opening night. On Friday, the event welcomes renowned drummer and vibraphonist Chuck Redd, culminating in a grand finale on Saturday with a tribute to the Terry Gibbs Dream Band.

Music lovers everywhere can find plenty of opportunities to enjoy some exceptional live performances this week.

From Frisell’s spontaneous trio mastery to the innovative sounds of Iyer and Kokoroko, and the local celebrations at Veasley’s birthday bash and the Weiss Mallet Festival, there’s something to satisfy every musical taste.
