The DC Center for the LGBT Community has an exciting lineup of events for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies throughout October, promising opportunities for socializing, networking, and community building.
Kicking off on Friday, October 3, the Center will host the “Center Aging Friday Tea Time” at 2 p.m. This gathering will be held in-person at the DC Center’s new location on 1827 Wiltberger St., NW. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP via the website or by emailing [email protected].
Later that evening, Go Gay DC will present their “First Friday LGBTQ+ Community Social” at Silver Diner Balston, starting at 7 p.m. It is an excellent opportunity to meet new friends, network professionally, and share ideas within the community. On Saturday, October 4, Go Gay DC will continue the celebrations with their “LGBTQ+ Community Brunch” at Freddie’s Beach Bar & Restaurant at noon. This weekly brunch is an inviting space where the DMV area LGBTQ+ community and allies can enjoy delicious food while engaging in conversation. Additionally, LGBTQ People of Color Support Group will meet that evening at 7 p.m. on Zoom. This peer support group provides a safe and judgment-free environment for members to discuss topics that impact their lives. Families Out Loud will also be hosting an exciting drag show titled “Out Loud-Washington DC Drag Show Ft. RuPaul’s Drag Race Queens” at the same time of 7 p.m. This event promises a night full of high-energy performances featuring renowned drag personalities like Brooke Lynn Hytes and Silky Nutmeg Ganache. Moving into Monday, October 6, the “Center Aging Monday Coffee Klatch” will occur at 10 a.m. on Zoom, designated as a social hour for older LGBTQ+ adults. Participants are welcome to bring their drink of choice, and for more information, they can reach out via email at [email protected].
The following day, Tuesday, October 7, a Universal Pride Meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Zoom, focusing on supporting and empowering people with disabilities. Those interested can contact [email protected] for further details.
Wednesday, October 8, will see the Job Club meet at 6 p.m. on Zoom. This weekly program is targeted towards job seekers, including those who have been unemployed for a long time, helping them to improve their confidence and job search skills. At the same time, Go Gay DC is hosting “LGBTQ+ Activism at Women’s National Democratic Club” at 6 p.m. at The Whittemore House. Participants will engage in letter and postcard writing campaigns aimed at encouraging voter participation in Virginia and other key state elections. This event will also feature free pizza, a cash bar, a fun raffle, and other engaging activities. More details are available on Eventbrite.
On Thursday, October 9, the DC Center will host its Fresh Produce Program throughout the day. This initiative will now operate on a lottery system to ensure fairness in distributing produce boxes, with no residency or income verification required. Additionally, Virtual Yoga with Charles M. will be held at 7 p.m. on Zoom, focusing on yoga and meditation. This free weekly class aims to promote wellness within the community, and participants can find further information on the DC Center’s website.
The evening will conclude with “Thirst Trap Thursday Drag Show” at Pitchers DC at 10 p.m. This event promises to be a vibrant drag experience, slated to feature various drag queens. Admission is free, with details available on Eventbrite.
Looking back to the previous weekend, on Friday, September 26, the month began with the “Center Aging Monthly Luncheon and Yoga” at noon, where members enjoyed a blend of yoga and a delicious meal. Later that evening, Go Gay DC hosted their “LGBTQ+ Community Happy Hour” at Dupont Italian Kitchen’s Bar, again fostering a friendly environment for building connections within the community.
At the same time, the Trans Discussion Group met on Zoom to offer solace and support for trans individuals questioning their identity in a welcoming environment.
On Saturday, September 27, Go Gay DC organized another “LGBTQ+ Community Brunch,” continuing to bring people together for good food and engaging conversation. Concurrently, at 11 a.m., the Black Lesbian Support Group met for a thoughtful discussion about their unique experiences, inviting all who identify as Black Lesbians or those questioning their identities.
On Sunday, September 28, the month closed with the “LGBTQ+ Ice Cream Social” hosted by Go Gay DC that provided a leisurely gathering with an array of ice cream flavors. Participants were treated to delightful options, including gluten-free and dairy-free selections.
As we transition into the new month, events like the “Center Aging Monday Coffee Klatch” continued to support older LGBTQ+ individuals on Mondays, while the community’s vibrancy shines through various other activities. In particular, the upcoming weeks hold special significance for those invested in LGBTQ+ networking, support, and celebration. With events designed to reach a diverse audience, the DC Center and its partners continue to foster an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome.
