Father of NBA Star Arrested Following Stabbing Incident in Las Vegas

A Las Vegas judge has set bail at $300,000 for Quenton Marcelles Brown, 57, who has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder related to a stabbing incident in west Las Vegas.

Brown was taken into custody after a stabbing was reported on Wednesday evening in the 1500 block of South Buffalo Drive, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The victim of the incident was transported to a local hospital with multiple stab wounds.

Defense attorney Arnold Weinstock confirmed that Brown is the father of Jaylen Brown, a star guard for the Boston Celtics and an NBA champion.

During Brown’s initial appearance hearing, Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Suzan Baucum expressed concerns regarding the danger Brown posed to the community, as well as whether he would return for court appearances.

Following the details of the police report, Baucum noted that Brown allegedly exited his vehicle and bumped into the vehicle next to him, which prompted an altercation with the victim.

The judge highlighted that Brown allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times, including in the back.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Richard Scow stated that Brown had stabbed the victim repeatedly, detailing a witness account where the first stab was inflicted on the victim’s back as he turned away from Brown.

Scow went on to say that the victim was subsequently stabbed in the chest and hand, among possibly other areas.

Prosecutors argued that since Brown challenged the victim to a fight, it negated any claim of self-defense, particularly as he attacked the victim from behind.

Richard Scow requested the substantial bail and high-level electronic monitoring due to concerns that Brown may pose a flight risk.

He also pointed out that Brown has a prior domestic battery conviction and an outstanding warrant in Georgia for failing to appear in court.

In response, Weinstock presented a contrasting perspective, asserting that his client was acting in self-defense.

He claimed that Brown was a victim as well, stating that the alleged victim had attacked Brown’s vehicle and physically assaulted him.

Weinstock mentioned that the man allegedly struck Brown over the head with a gun before Brown responded.

The defense lawyer emphasized that Brown, a former heavyweight boxing champion, was merely trying to protect himself during the incident.

Weinstock highlighted Brown’s long-term residence in Las Vegas, as well as his support network from family, while proposing a considerably lower bail range of $25,000 to $50,000.

He noted that his client has been dealing with significant medical issues and had recently undergone surgery.

As of Thursday afternoon, Quenton Marcelles Brown was still listed on the online roster of the Clark County Detention Center.

His son, Jaylen Brown, is a four-time NBA All-Star and was part of the victorious 2024 Celtics team that won the NBA championship, during which he was named NBA Finals MVP.

Following the court proceedings, Weinstock expressed optimism that his client would be able to post bail.

Quenton Marcelles Brown is scheduled to appear in court again on August 26.
