Brooklyn is buzzing this week with a variety of family-friendly activities that are perfect for enjoying the last days of summer. From outdoor movies and concerts to block parties and festivals, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Starting the week off on Monday, families can participate in Babies & Books at Leonard Library in Williamsburg from 10:30-11:00 am. This lapsit storytime is specifically designed for babies who are not yet walking.
For those looking to skate, the Pier 2 Roller Rink at Brooklyn Bridge Park offers free admission hours from 3:30-6:00 pm, perfect for a roller skating session with stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan.
Later in the day, the Library Lab at Sunset Park Library invites kids to make slime from 4-5 pm, introducing them to some fun chemistry basics. The day will come to an end with a Free Family Movie Night at Maimonides Park Cyclone Stadium in Coney Island, featuring the animated film ‘Inside Out 2’ from 7-9 pm.
Tuesday brings more excitement with activities such as Toddler Play Time at Carroll Park, running from 9:00-9:45 am, and the Free Music Show with Hopalong Andrew at Whole Foods at 10 am. Families can engage in a high-energy performance of Stomp, Clap and Sing with Lavender Blues at Central Library from 10:30-11:30 am.
Later, kids can enjoy the Back to School Party and Backpack Giveaway at Kings Theatre in Flatbush from 11 am to 1 pm. Those with furry friends can pick up a free pup cup at HEAL Vet in DUMBO, available from 11 am-5 pm.
The afternoon will also feature a Tutu School Ballet Bookclub in DUMBO and the Laser Engraving workshop for teens at Saratoga Library from 4-5 pm. A read-aloud session with a dog will occur at Brooklyn Heights Library from 4-5 pm, and the Tween Time: Colorful Crafts event will take place at the same library for ages 9-13.
The evening continues with a double feature outdoor movie event at Domino Square, showcasing ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ and ‘Rent’. Nature enthusiasts can also participate in the Sunset Volunteer Series in Prospect Park from 5-7 pm.
On Wednesday, teens can engage in community service by helping with restoration work in Prospect Park. From 12:00-2:30 pm, families can participate in the Wednesday Wonders event at Abolitionist Place, offering games, puppet shows, and hula hooping.
Midweek also marks a day for free admission at the New York Aquarium from 3-6 pm, but reservations are required. Enjoy the Police Commissioner’s Day of Play from 4-7 pm at Shore Road Park with various sports and games. For movie lovers, there will be outdoor screenings of ‘Loving Vincent’ in Coffey Park and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ in Prospect Park, both beginning at sunset.
Thursday fits in more festivities with Tot Time at Marsha P. Johnson State Park from 10-11 am, followed by a leisurely Prospect Park Stroller Walk. Families can participate in the Summer Spruce Up program in Prospect Park from 10:00 am-1:00 pm while learning about nature and wildlife.
Storytime continues at Fort Greene Park for children of all ages from 11:00-11:45 am. Later, the community can benefit from open hours at the Environmental Education Center at Brooklyn Bridge Park from 3-5 pm, where families can explore through guided self-led investigations.
As evening approaches, families can enjoy an outdoor movie screening of ‘Clueless’ in Fort Greene Park, while jazz lovers can join in the Jazz at Jitu event in Clinton Hill. The Summer Sunset Salsa at Atlantic Terminal Mall Plaza from 6-9 pm also invites families for a lively evening of dance.
To wrap up the week, many events are planned for the weekend. On Saturday, the STEAMventures Fair in Fort Greene Park from 9 am-1 pm promises hands-on activities for kids aged 5 to 12. Families can also enjoy free kayaking sessions at Pier 4 Beach all day long, as well as visit the Back to School Community Bash at Atlantic Terminal Mall.
The Coney Island Sand Sculpting Competition from 12-4 pm will feature magnificent sculptures and live entertainment. Outdoor fun continues with Sprinkler Saturday on Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights and Splish Splash Saturdays on Hoyt Open Street.
Among the many scheduled events, the Hindu Lamp Ceremony at Brooklyn Bridge Park from 4-7:30 pm will be an opportunity to appreciate cultural traditions through performance and decoration of palm leaf lamps.
Finally, the One Crown Heights Festival on Sunday will bring music, games, and food from local vendors, making it a fantastic way to conclude a week full of activities.
