In the vibrant heart of downtown Atlanta, Georgia State University (GSU) is creating pathways for students to connect with the world beyond the classroom through its Office of International Initiatives (OII).
These study abroad programs are not just academic diversions; they are life-changing experiences that shape careers and contribute to a workforce that is better prepared to thrive in an increasingly globalized economy.
GSU’s international programs open doors for students, allowing them to travel to places like Cuba, Spain, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.
Returning from these journeys, students bring back insights and perspectives that prove invaluable as they enter the workforce of Atlanta’s international business landscape.
Ashley Aguilar, a first-generation college graduate and a participant in GSU’s study abroad program, explains how her time in Korea crystalized her aspirations in public service.
Aguilar now works with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Travel Management Office, a trajectory that she attributes to her overseas experience.
“My study abroad experience impacted the way I see foreign affairs and helped me build worldwide relationships,” she notes.
Josiah Owens shares a similar sentiment, having studied in Cuba.
His experience not only exposed him to political subtleties but also informed his current work as a program manager for employee and talent development at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) in Atlanta.
