Exploring Philadelphia’s Happiness Map and Culinary Delights

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — This week, FYI Philly takes a delightful journey in search of the city’s happiest spots, unveiling The Happiness Map, a vibrant representation of Philadelphia’s favorite places.

Originating from Drexel University’s Happiness Lab, the map was inspired by a challenge posed by the lab’s director, Eric Zillmer, to his Psych 101 students. He encouraged them to explore Philadelphia and return with one place that sparks joy.

Out of their discoveries, 243 students identified 28 spots now celebrated on The Happiness Map. According to Dr. Zillmer, the essence of these locations lies in their ability to evoke a sense of liveliness and presence, making individuals feel larger than life.

For those interested in exploring the findings further, Drexel’s W.W. Hagerty Library is hosting a free exhibit titled The Philadelphia Challenge, which runs through November 30.

In the culinary sphere, Sophie’s BBQ is making waves by bringing classic Philadelphia-style barbecue to the suburbs. Chef Greg, who has honed his skills since his teenage years in fine dining, has returned to his barbecue roots.

The menu features all the traditional barbecue staples with a unique twist, such as butterscotch swirl cornbread paired with orange honey vanilla butter. Signature dishes include chicken-and-waffles topped with honey-whipped ricotta, candied bacon, and a sweet potato waffle.

Additionally, Chef Greg has teamed up with Four Birds Distilling from Pennsylvania to craft an inspired drink menu. Sophie’s BBQ is also catering to Eagles fans with game day packages that include generous party servings of wings, ribs, brisket cheesesteak sandwiches, and more. Starting in fall, the restaurant will also launch a new event, Havertown Hog Roasts, every Thursday in September.

Meanwhile, Casa Borinqueña offers a taste of Puerto Rico with a unique twist, serving favorite dishes in a vegan style. Chef Lulu Nau, alongside her son Wenlock, aims to transport patrons to Puerto Rico through colorful decor reminiscent of Old San Juan.

The menu showcases island classics such as mofongo cups, pasteles, and pastelillos, all crafted to be vegan-friendly.

Expanding into new territory, Mama Hawks Cafe has opened a new location at The Michener in Doylestown, a continuation of their Bucks County legacy that began in Peddler’s Village in 2020. Co-owners Liz and Doug Hawkins named the business after Liz’s affectionate nickname, derived from her homemade baked treats when their children were younger.

The cafe is known for its bean-to-cup coffee and a variety of espresso drinks, alongside an appealing menu that offers pastries, smoothies, sandwiches, and more.

In another entrepreneurial endeavor, Allison Shimamoto has launched Haiama Beauty, a clean hair product company that focuses on organic ingredients catering specifically to Black, Brown, multiracial, and multi-ethnic mothers and their children.

Among her most sought-after products is ‘the everything cream,’ designed for use on hair, face, and skin. A soothing scalp serum addresses issues like dandruff and mosquito bites. This venture began when a mainstream curly hair product caused her hair to fall out, propelling her into the world of natural care.

Encouraged by friends and a supportive business professor mentor, she transformed her part-time craft into a full-time commitment. Operating within the Bok building, her mission is to create products that are both eco-friendly and nurturing to curls, hoping her offerings help customers embrace their natural texture.

Lastly, for those seeking tranquility away from the city’s hustle and bustle, Daisy Field Farms offers a serene mountain experience. Visitors can ride horses through enchanting woods, appreciating the land through the lens of a family that has lived there for generations.

As these various establishments and attractions are highlighted, Philadelphia emerges not only as a city of diverse cuisine and rich culture but also as a community centered on happiness and well-being.
