Initially viewed with skepticism, the platform’s capacity for both misinformation and truth has become a focal point for community-driven projects aiming to enrich the encyclopedia and enhance public knowledge.
Across the globe, passionate individuals and organizations have begun organizing Wikipedia edit-a-thons, collaborative events intended to update and create entries on various topics. Houstonians, in particular, have linked their efforts to gamify the process of contributing to this crucial resource, focusing on topics ranging from local emergency services to pressing issues like climate change.
Donna Török-Oberholtzer, associate librarian at the Menil Collection, advocates for active participation in Wikipedia editing. “As a user of Wikipedia, you should be empowered to ensure that the content you’re looking for is valid,” she emphasizes, marking the importance of community engagement in enhancing the platform’s reliability.
After volunteering at her first Art + Feminism event in 2019, Török-Oberholtzer has spearheaded the initiative in Houston since 2020. This international effort aims to increase the visibility of women in the arts, fields where they remain notably underrepresented compared to their male counterparts. She welcomes diverse participants, both in-person and online, to the edit-a-thons held at the Menil’s library, which is home to rare books not typically accessible to the public. “If they want to access anything in the library, they just have to reach out to me and set up an appointment,” she explains regarding her support for fellow editors.
On a similar path, the community-focused organization ImagiNoir/BLMHTX has recognized Wikipedia’s potential as a social justice tool. Community organizer Jaison Oliver has initiated local edit-a-thons aimed at countering misconceptions surrounding crime in Houston. Contrary to popular beliefs, crime rates in the city have been decreasing, and Oliver views Wikipedia as instrumental in correcting narratives and offering community-centric alternatives to traditional policing methods.
Inspired by groups like AfroCrowd and Black Lunch Table, Oliver began hosting editing workshops in 2016 in an effort to make vital city resources more accessible to residents. Through these workshops, he has enabled participants to update Wikipedia pages with important information, such as emergency notification systems like Alert Houston. “People just don’t know a lot about how our city works,” Oliver remarks, stressing the need for improved public knowledge regarding civic infrastructure.
The Alert Houston page now provides essential information, including how to sign up for notifications and language options available for non-English speakers. With the help of Arte Público Press, the Spanish-language publishing entity at the University of Houston, Oliver has worked to make this information linguistically accessible to a broader audience.
Wikipedia is not merely a tool for information dissemination; Oliver perceives it as a means for community accountability. He points out that civic leaders often do not reference their sources in public forums, but updated Wikipedia pages allow residents to verify claims promptly. “These editing workshops are important because they teach community members how to shape the narratives that are being used to discuss our community,” he states, underlining the power dynamics involved in knowledge creation.
In addition to community initiatives, academic contributions are also reshaping the Wikipedia landscape in Houston. Diana Strassmann, a distinguished professor at Rice University’s Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality, has integrated Wikipedia into her classroom since 2007. Tasking her students with editing Wikipedia entries, Strassmann has focused on enhancing biographies of notable women while expanding efforts to tackle a diversity of subjects, including poverty and climate change.
Having observed her son’s reliance on Wikipedia, Strassmann recognized its potential as an educational resource exceeding traditional encyclopedias. “At the present moment, when there’s so much disinformation… the way that Wikipedia is constructed means that, on any contested topic, only the most accurate fact-based material ends up being represented,” she comments, affirming the platform’s integrity and communal value.
Understanding the challenges associated with misinformation, each of these contributors aims to engage different groups in the collaborative effort to uphold the encyclopedia’s accuracy. Török-Oberholtzer, Oliver, and Strassmann share a commitment to fostering an environment where truth prevails over falsehood, readily correcting any information that may be tampered with on Wikipedia pages.
Wikipedia’s community-oriented structure encourages collaboration; dedicated editors reinforce one another’s efforts to produce quality content. Strassmann notes the importance of group dynamics in motivating less experienced editors, suggesting that partnering with others can lead to significant contributions. “When you get together with like-minded individuals who can answer your questions or work together, you’re able to feel like you’ve really accomplished something important after the edit-a-thon,” she concludes.
