Michael James Scott, known for his electrifying performances as the Genie in ‘Aladdin’ on Broadway, returns to San Diego Comic-Con for his third consecutive year as co-host of the highly anticipated Her Universe Fashion Show, alongside Ashley Eckstein, founder of Her Universe and the voice of Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars.
In an exclusive interview, Scott delves into the unique essence of the Her Universe Fashion Show, highlighting its unparalleled combination of fashion, pop culture, and artistic self-expression that sets it apart from other events at Comic-Con.
Scott reflects on the meaningful journey that led him back to this event after he was invited by Eckstein during their high school days in Orlando. The pair’s reconnection through their Disney ties has blossomed into a partnership that has made the Her Universe Fashion Show a staple event at Comic-Con.
“I had no idea what I agreed to when Ashley asked me to co-host the Her Universe Fashion Show,” Scott recalls with excitement.
Since that pivotal moment, he has embraced the vibrant community of artists who merge fashion with their fandoms in this dramatic showcase, infusing his Broadway flair into the performances.
Scott is no stranger to large fandom gatherings, having previously participated in Disney’s D23 events, but he notes the sheer scale and infectious enthusiasm of San Diego Comic-Con as truly unique.
“There is nothing like San Diego Comic-Con; you can’t even really describe it. The energy is unbelievable. I’ve done D23 several times, and it has a completely different vibe too. But what is mind-blowing is the community,” he explains.
Scott emphasizes how Comic-Con serves as a vibrant tapestry of inclusivity where fans from all over the world unite to celebrate their passions, making it a powerful reminder of theater’s ability to create connections.
He acknowledges that many individuals in the theater and fandom realms have felt ‘othered’ at some point in their lives, and that these communities provide a space where everyone is welcomed, creating a sense of belonging that mirrors the experiences theater offers.
This year’s Her Universe Fashion Show promises to be particularly special, showcasing talent that challenges norms and elevates representation across a spectrum of identities and stories.
A notable highlight of this year’s event will be the participation of Marissa Bode, known for her role as Nessarose in Wicked, as a guest judge.
Scott’s excitement for Bode’s involvement is palpable. “It’s so exciting! You know, as a theater nerd, this is like an explosion of theater nerddom!”
With Bode joining him at the judges’ table, Scott is eager to witness the stunning designs that fuse fashion with creative storytelling and representation, bringing forth an added theatrical dimension to the competition.
The Her Universe Fashion Show is not merely a showcase of designs; it’s a celebration of artists who defy expectations and make a statement. Scott cherishes the opportunity to represent his Broadway roots while engaging with the vibrant fashion community at Comic-Con.
In addition to his duties as a co-host, Scott has teamed up with Eckstein on a new project aimed at building friendships and community through their HypeFriend! podcast.
The show is designed to inspire a “friendship revolution,” focusing on how to foster deeper connections in an increasingly disconnected world.
“Making friends in 2025 looks completely different from what it was when I was growing up,” Scott acknowledges.
He emphasizes the importance of understanding how to better navigate friendships today, as well as being supportive and honest with one another.
The duo aims to explore what being a good friend means in current times, while also discussing personal growth.
“We just launched last week and already have episodes out, featuring guests like Tony-winning Nicky James on our most recent episode. We are starting a friendship revolution one hype friend at a time,” Scott shares proudly.
The excitement around the 11th annual Her Universe Fashion Show is palpable, as fans prepare for an evening of creativity and empowerment that captures the spirit of community and self-expression.
Taking place on Thursday, July 24, at 6:00 PM PT in Seaport Ballroom at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the event will showcase various themed designs, creating a space where fashion meets fandom.
Wristbands are required for entry, and interested attendees can look for more information at the official Her Universe website.
Furthermore, the HypeFriend! podcast will host a live taping titled the ‘Her Universe Fashion Show After Party’ on Friday, July 25, from 10-11 AM at the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library. This event invites fans to participate in the discussions, hear behind-the-scenes stories, and meet the champions of the fan-favorite fashion event.
Both the fashion show and the podcast stand as powerful reminders of the transformative power of friendship, creativity, and community as we celebrate the intersection of fashion and fandom at San Diego Comic-Con.
