The Smith Center Shines Bright with New Signage and a Tribute to Entertainment Legacy

The Smith Center has embraced the spirit of Broadway with its significant updates, including new outdoor marquees that enhance its art-deco inspired design.

Completed on Friday morning, these marquees, known as blade signs, were conceived by venue architect David M. Schwarz and constructed by YESCO sign company of Las Vegas.

A striking feature of the signs is the giant ‘SMITH’ illuminated by light bulbs on both sides of their primary surfaces, complemented by ‘THE SMITH CENTER’ in smaller red LED lettering.

Smith Center President Myron Martin shared that although the signs were part of the venue’s original design, they were delayed due to engineering costs.

Efforts to revive the project began about a year ago, marking a return to the vision set forth for ‘The Heart of the Arts.’

The signs now stand proudly alongside iconic local landmarks, like the replica Vegas Vic sign at Vic’s restaurant and jazz club located across Promenade Place.

Martin praised the intricate design details, saying they invoke the essence of both Broadway marquees and early signs of the Las Vegas Strip.

In a nod to the entertainment community, Palm Restaurant at the Forum Shops at Caesars has unveiled caricatures honoring the dynamic duo of Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett.

Their likenesses are displayed above Brian Newman, Gaga’s friend and bandleader, and next to legendary icon Frank Sinatra.

The artwork is a beautiful tribute crafted by Las Vegas artist Erica Deutsch.

In addition to new signs and feature art, the aging paintbrush sculptures by Dennis Oppenheim in the Arts District are undergoing a restoration.

Not all community members had embraced these sculptures in the past, and opinions may still vary with the updates.

The newly refurbished LEDs shine brighter than before, a decision celebrated by many.

However, noted local historian Brian ‘Paco’ Alvarez expressed concern that the brush tips lack the frizzy appearance true paintbrushes typically possess.

Despite some critique, the effort to revitalize these sculptures is generally appreciated, especially when compared to less inspiring alternatives.

On a lighter note, there’s been buzz surrounding the hiatus of the show ‘Mavericks.’

Co-producer Matt Franzetti mentioned in passing that maybe a shaman should have been summoned to clear any negative vibes, referring to a previous experience where a shaman was called to the Paris Theater in November 2022.

They attempted to boost ticket sales during the run of ‘Bat Out of Hell,’ but unfortunately, the show closed on New Year’s Day 2023 without the anticipated audience turnout.

Franzetti, who was part of the team at Base Entertainment that managed the show, humorously noted that the Plaza Showroom is currently free of such spiritual interventions.

Going back to the theme of ‘cool hangs’ in Vegas, it’s notable to recall the influence of Jerry Jones, who passed away on July 1 at 62.

Jones played a major role in promoting cool hang events, such as shows at the Lounge at the Palms, which he often attended.

In memory of Jerry, his friends organized a doubleheader ‘Cool Hang Alert’ event scheduled for Friday, Aug. 15.

The evening kicks off with a celebration of life at The Copa at Bootlegger Bistro from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by Kenny Davidsen’s show at Piazza at Tuscany until 1 a.m.

These events are free of cover charges, with the only requirement being a spirit of harmony, echoing Jerry’s lasting influence on so many lives.

Ultimately, the legacy of Jerry Jones and the ongoing developments at The Smith Center celebrate the vibrant arts and entertainment culture that Las Vegas embodies.
