On September 17, Matt Maltese took the stage at the Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta, marking the second night of his much-anticipated tour following the release of his latest album, “Hers.”
The British-Canadian songwriter delivered a slow, romantic setlist that resonated with fans, showcasing iconic tracks like “Nightclub Love,” “Everybody’s Just as Crazy As Me,” and his most renowned song, “As the World Caves In.”
Attendees were enchanted by his emotional and polished performance, as they danced and sang along with Maltese and his live band.
Opening for Maltese was Cornelia Murr, a fellow British singer-songwriter whose enchanting voice and captivating stage presence set a high bar for the rest of the evening.
As Maltese made his powerful entrance, the audience erupted in applause, filling the venue with excitement.
Dressed in a simple blue sweater, he appeared on stage alongside his talented band, who effortlessly switched instruments between songs, enhancing the melodic experience for fans with pleasant sounds of the clarinet and electric guitar.
Maltese performed several of his iconic hits, including “Nightclub Love,” “Everybody’s Just as Crazy as Me,” and the emotional ballad “Krystal,” which reflects on a tumultuous past love.
Taking a brief pause between songs, he introduced the members of his band, further engaging with the crowd.
The combination of his enthralling voice, choreographed lighting, and exceptional musicianship ensured a night that fans would cherish forever.
During the performance of “Madhouse,” lightning changed to red at the song’s climax, capturing the fans’ attention and heightening the atmosphere within the venue.
In a move that delighted his strong Atlanta fanbase, Maltese performed a song that he had not yet played on tour—”Wish You’d Ask Me.” This song showcased his longing for a deeper emotional connection, allowing the audience to fall for his voice yet again.
Maltese then invited Murr back to the stage for a duet of “Arthouse Cinema,” further amplifying the emotions of romantic grief with poignant lyrics that touched the hearts of many in attendance.
Maltese’s connection with the audience was palpable as he playfully queried if it was anyone’s birthday.
A fervent array of fans leaped in anticipation, hoping to be acknowledged. One lucky fan in the front row had the incredible opportunity to join him on stage as he serenaded her with “Happy Birthday,” while she sat regally in a chair with a crown, and the guitarist presented her with a slice of birthday cake.
As the show neared its conclusion, Maltese announced that he would perform the fan-favorite hit, “As the World Caves In,” a song characterized by its themes of intimacy and connection amidst chaos.
With mixed feelings, the crowd watched as his band exited the stage, leaving a lingering sense of longing in the air.
However, the audience quickly erupted into chants of “Encore! Encore! Encore!” revitalizing the atmosphere as they called for the artist’s return.
Maltese graciously reappeared, closing the emotional night with two more beloved tracks: “Cure for Emptiness” and “Everyone Adores You.” This time, the crowd listened with intense passion, fully aware that they were nearing the end of a truly memorable evening.
With just two nights into his tour, Matt Maltese has not only met expectations but also set high standards for the remainder of his performances, solidifying his reputation as a masterful artist and captivating storyteller.
