Elon Musk Announces Formation of America Party in Response to Trump’s Tax Cuts

Elon Musk has officially declared his intention to launch a new political party, the America Party, following his disagreement with President Donald Trump over a significant tax cuts law.

Musk, who was previously a staunch ally of Trump while leading the Department of Government Efficiency, has grown increasingly critical of the president’s latest legislation, which was signed into law last Friday.

As the bill was advancing through Congress, Musk threatened to establish the America Party if what he termed an “insane spending bill” was passed.

He voiced his frustrations on X, the social media platform he owns, stating, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Although the formation of new political parties is a regular occurrence in the United States, such parties often struggle to gain traction against the established Republican and Democratic parties. However, Musk’s wealth—reportedly over $250 million spent in support of Trump’s 2024 election—could give him the financial clout to influence the upcoming 2026 elections and the balance of power in Congress.

Musk’s renewed hostility toward Trump risks jeopardizing his business interests, particularly since Tesla, his publicly traded company, has seen market fluctuations and relies heavily on government contracts that could be affected by his political activities.

As of Sunday morning, several entities claiming to be the America Party had started appearing in the Federal Election Commission’s database, including variations incorporating terms like “DOGE” or “X.” However, none of these appeared to be legitimate, using dubious email addresses that did not reflect a credible organization.

Musk engaged with users on X over the weekend, soliciting feedback regarding the new party and indicated plans to participate actively in the 2026 midterm elections.

Just last month, Musk had hinted at a potential push to unseat every member of Congress voting in favor of Trump’s bill, which he labeled as a “disgusting abomination” and raised concerns about its contribution to the growing federal deficit.

He expressed his discontent in a message on X, stating, “The Republican Party has a clean sweep of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches and STILL had the nerve to massively increase the size of government, expanding the national debt by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS.”

This shift in Musk’s stance marks a stark contrast to earlier statements made in May, when he suggested that he would be reducing his political contributions.

Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary who had previous disagreements with Musk, commented on CNN’s “State of the Union,” expressing doubt about Musk’s political viability. He noted that while the principles of Musk’s previous initiatives had popularity, his personal polling figures did not reflect this support.

Bessent speculated that Musk’s board of directors would likely be pressuring him to refocus on his business pursuits instead of delving into political endeavors.

As this story develops, it remains to be seen what tangible steps Musk will take to establish the America Party and how it will impact the landscape of American politics moving forward.
