Clear the Shelters Campaign: Adopt a Furry Friend This August

Clear the Shelters is back for another year, promoting animal adoption across the nation. This annual campaign takes place from August 1 to August 31, culminating in a significant event on Saturday, August 23.

For many San Diegans, this is an opportunity to bring home a new furry companion. NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 San Diego are partnering with local animal shelters and rescues to elevate the importance of pet adoption while raising funds for animal welfare throughout the month of August.

Several participating shelters across San Diego County are offering discounted adoption fees, with some even providing unbeatable deals as the month progresses. The San Diego Humane Society, for instance, is slashing its adoption fees by 50% during Clear the Shelters.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the grand event on Saturday, August 23. Both NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 will host this special gathering at the San Diego Humane Society’s campus located on Gaines Street, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Excitingly, all adoption fees will be waived during this event, allowing families to adopt without financial barriers. More details about the event will be shared closer to the date.

While various shelters are primarily featuring dogs and cats for adoption, it’s worth noting that some locations also house rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, and even farm animals, ensuring there are plenty of options to choose from for potential pet owners.

For those unable to visit shelters in person, pet lovers can still explore their options virtually via the WeRescue app. This user-friendly platform allows users to search for adoptable pets by breed, gender, size, and other factors. In addition, users can submit adoption applications directly and communicate with shelters for any inquiries.

Since its inception in 2015, the Clear the Shelters initiative has had a remarkable impact, raising millions of dollars for participating animal shelters and rescues. The national campaign has successfully helped nearly 1.2 million pets find their forever homes while generating over $5 million in support for shelters and rescues across the U.S.

Community involvement is crucial to the success of this campaign. Even if you’re not ready to adopt a pet this year, you can still contribute to the cause through donations. Donations to the general fund are accepted from now until September 15, while contributions to individual shelters can be made throughout the month of August via ClearTheSheltersFund.org.
