Thousands Removed from Houston Housing Authority Waitlist Amid Update Initiative

The Houston Housing Authority (HHA) has seen a significant drop in its Housing Choice Voucher waitlist, with approximately 16,600 applicants losing their place due to failure to update their information during a recent initiative. This has drastically reduced the number of applicants still seeking this critical federal aid for low-income families to under 2,000.

The Housing Choice Voucher program mandates that participants allocate between 30% to 40% of their income towards rent, while the HHA subsidizes the remaining amount. The waitlist for this highly coveted program last opened in 2016, attracting about 30,000 applications at the time.

Earlier this year, the waitlist included 18,246 people. However, only 1,599 responded to HHA’s
