Pacific Beach Ice Cream Co. is once again making waves in the ice cream scene, this time with a prestigious accolade from the seventh annual San Diego Scoop Festival.
Owner Dave Wright proudly claimed the title of ‘Flavor of the Year’ with his creation, ‘Dad’s Famous Mint Chip,’ which captivated both judges and festival-goers alike.
Inspired by his father’s award-winning ice cream shop in Northern California, Wright’s mint chip flavor combines nostalgic elements with a creamy texture that many fondly remember from their childhoods.
The event, held on June 28 in North Park, saw over 30 ice cream and gelato vendors from San Diego County coming together to showcase their delicious offerings, all in support of local nonprofits aimed at helping under-resourced communities.
Wright shared his thoughts on the event, saying, ‘It’s a way to give back to the community while also showing off your business a little bit.’
Originally from Delaware, Wright comes from a family steeped in the ice cream business.
His parents started making ice cream after retiring in Nevada City, Northern California, using traditional methods to create bold and delectable flavors.
Wright credits his father with instilling in him a passion for creating standout flavors.
‘He really kind of jumped into it, which seemingly is a family trait now,’ Wright remarked, noting his father’s commitment to crafting genuine flavors that stand out from mass-produced offerings.
For anyone curious about how Wright creates his unique ice cream flavors, he describes his process as one rooted in creativity and nostalgia.
His offerings span a vibrant spectrum, including classic options like coconut and pistachio, as well as geographical specialties such as ‘Julian Dutch Apple Pie.’
Wright explained, ‘I kind of look around for things that remind me of tasty desserts and try to do that.’
For example, he sources authentic Julian pies, which are then incorporated directly into his ice cream, providing a truly unique experience.
‘Let’s kind of rework some of the flavors and bring them back to the way things used to be,’ he stated, emphasizing his goal to enhance traditional flavors while preserving their essence.
Trends in ice cream flavors have evolved over the years, according to Wright.
He recalls a rise in popularity for salted caramel, and before that, the vibrant Ube flavor.
‘I don’t add any fake colors. I want to do it the old-fashioned way,’ Wright insisted, underscoring his commitment to authenticity in his flavors.
Wright draws inspiration from nostalgia, explaining that ice cream represents a time when one could relive their childhood memories.
For him, a $6 scoop can transport people back to their younger years, invoking feelings of joy and innocence.
Wright’s motivation for entering the ice cream business was deeply community-oriented.
‘Because it’s community-based,’ he stated, highlighting the unique role ice cream shops play in fostering community spirit.
He believes that businesses like his can contribute positively to their local areas, commenting, ‘if you give to the community, the community gives back. But you’ve got to have the hand out first.’
Being in the ice cream industry also provides Wright with immediate gratification.
‘I get to see the person eating what I made,’ he said with a smile.
Wright also creatively integrates elements from his childhood into his ice cream flavors, such as incorporating Pop Rocks candy into his offerings for an engaging twist.
‘I wanted to share a piece of my family,’ he explained, mentioning how he crafts a flavor reminiscent of the sweet potato casserole his mother used to make for Thanksgiving.
When asked about the most rewarding aspect of his work, Wright’s answer was simple yet profound: ‘I love seeing the smiles on people’s faces on something that you make.’
For those looking to indulge in Wright’s award-winning flavors, Pacific Beach Ice Cream Co. is located at 1010 Grand Ave.
