Summer Activities Flourish in Philadelphia Parks

As summer unfolds, the parks of Philadelphia come alive with a plethora of activities designed to promote health, wellness, and creativity.

From Wellness Wednesdays to guided hikes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the great outdoors.

A highlight of the summer season is the Wellness Wednesdays series taking place in West Fairmount Park.

Organized by Fairmount Park Conservancy, these events include meditative and reflective programs led by Coach Shay of Inner Sanctuary Wellness on select dates through August.

Participants can join the programs during the last week of each month—June 25, July 30, and August 27—from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

In addition to the wellness offerings, the West Fairmount Park We Walk PHL meetup sets the stage for these enjoyable activities, allowing community members to engage in fitness and conversation.

This initiative promotes walking and healthy lifestyles, with the summer walking season running through June 30.

Every second Saturday of the month offers additional outdoor experiences with free guided hikes.

Themes for these hikes include Birdwatching on June 14, a Tree Tour on July 12, and a Summer Hike and Meditation on August 9.

These events run from 10 a.m. to noon, providing a great way for nature enthusiasts to explore the diverse ecosystems of the parks.

Another beloved activity is Yoga in the Park, scheduled for select Sundays: June 8, July 13, and August 10.

This popular event takes place in the green expanses of East Fairmount Park, led by various local Tula Yoga instructors.

For seniors, a special 9 a.m. yoga class will also be offered on these dates, ensuring that yoga is inclusive for all ages, with no admission fee for any of the sessions.

Bailar en FDR introduces a vibrant option for locals interested in dance.

Salsa dancing classes at the historic FDR Park Boathouse welcome participants of all skill levels, transforming the venue into a lively dance space.

Classes occur from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. followed by a social dance until 11:30 p.m., hosted by DJ Val Flores and Philly Outdoor Bachata & Salsa on June 27, July 18, and August 22.

For those who enjoy stargazing, the Park After Dark events present an alluring Moonwalk and Stargazing party in East Fairmount Park.

On select Tuesdays—June 3, July 1, and August 5—eventgoers can join Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a guided moonwalk and telescope observation from 8:30-10:30 p.m., while learning about the forest’s nocturnal wildlife.

These events, priced at $15, will shift to an earlier time of 8-10 p.m. for the August gathering.

A significant community event will be held on Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at FDR Park to celebrate the opening of the Gateway Plaza at Broad & Pattison.

The day will feature free fun-filled activities, park tours, snacks, and entertainment, marking an exciting launch for the Conservancy’s Fair Play Campaign.

As the summer progresses, local volunteers can also participate in Volunteer Days, with opportunities for service and community engagement.

Following two successful events in May, locals are invited to contribute at Parkside Edge in West Fairmount Park on June 10 from 9 a.m. to noon.

With a variety of programs available, Philadelphia’s parks offer enriching experiences that encourage residents to connect with each other and nature throughout the summer.
