Grand Jury to Investigate In-Custody Death of Portland Man During Police Intervention

The Multnomah District Attorney’s office has announced the convening of a grand jury to investigate the in-custody death of Damon Lamarr Johnson, a 52-year-old man, who died following an incident involving three Portland Police officers in the Kenton neighborhood on June 27.

Johnson’s death occurred after police were dispatched to his North Portland apartment for a welfare check due to reports of him flooding the unit and displaying knives out of the window.

Body camera footage from the incident captures Johnson in his disheveled apartment, appearing to experience a mental health crisis when the officers arrived.
