As summer temperatures rise, Resident Taqueria takes a significant step forward by unveiling an expanded seating area and a new sit-down bar.
Since its inception in 2015, Andrew Savoie’s taco concept has enjoyed a steady flow of customers, but the limited indoor capacity has often led to cramped conditions.
With only 20 indoor seats and room for just two standing parties, customers frequently faced long lines and limited space, which deterred some from entering.
The recent acquisition of the former Highland Nail space has allowed Savoie to address these challenges head-on, creating a more comfortable atmosphere for diners.
“The expansion was designed to give back to the community by providing more seating, allowing customers to enjoy their meals without feeling rushed,” Savoie explained.
The new addition brings an extra 1,200 square feet to Resident’s existing space and increases its seating capacity by about 40, a move that Savoie anticipates will enhance the dining experience significantly.
Construction began in March, and the newly designed area opened to the public on July 16.
Despite the change in size, Savoie emphasizes that the essence of Resident remains unchanged, focusing on maintaining a welcoming environment.
“The new space serves as an extension of what we’ve built, ensuring that customers can savor their meals at a relaxed pace,” he added.
The design of the new area features alternating golden triangle patterns, symbolizing the stable trajectory of Resident, alongside slate-hued panels that create a calming ambiance.
Savoie aimed to contrast the lively, casual feel of the original taqueria with a more serene setting, catering to customers seeking a slower-paced dining experience.
Although most changes center on added seating, Savoie has plans to further leverage the new ten-seat Spanish tile bar for an expanded tequila and mezcal program in the future.
While the bar will not operate as a full-service establishment, Savoie envisions offering traditional Mexican cocktails, such as a well-crafted gin and tonic featuring Oaxacan gin made from agave.
“The bar is primarily additional seating,” he stated.
“We plan to gradually develop more opportunities at that bar.
For now, we are utilizing the space, but we aim to extend our hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, allowing community members to enjoy cocktails at Resident.”
The layout includes a revolving false wall that can serve as a divider between the two spaces for late-night cocktail hours or private events.
Savoie envisions this area as a versatile space that can adapt to various functions, facilitating a lively environment for gatherings and entertainment, depending on the occasion.
“With some creative arrangement, we can transform it into a cocktail standing space,” he said.
“We aim to have the flexibility to host live entertainment, feature visual ads on displays, and even bring in DJ music.”
As Resident Taqueria expands, Savoie looks forward to embracing the community’s needs, providing a vibrant, inviting space for locals to enjoy their meals and social gatherings throughout the summer months.
