San Diego Residents Urged to Set Up Trash Service Accounts Before Deadline

San Diego city officials have issued a reminder to residents regarding the impending deadline for setting up customer accounts for trash and recycling services. Property owners have until September 30 to select their preferred service level and determine the size of their trash and recycling bins. Following the deadline, city crews will commence the delivery of these bins beginning on October 6.

This announcement follows the narrow passage of Measure B in 2022, which successfully repealed ‘The People’s Ordinance’ trash collection model. The measure allows the city to implement a monthly fee for solid waste pickup specifically for single-family homes and multi-family complexes with up to four residence units located on a single lot.

The introduction of the solid waste fee marks a significant shift, breaking a 106-year-old practice where single-family homeowners were not charged for trash pickup. Starting from July 1, homeowners are now responsible for paying $42.76 per month to receive three 95-gallon cans designated for trash, recycling, and organic waste such as yard debris and food scraps, irrespective of the amount of waste they generate.

The current announcement serves as a follow-up, enabling residents to adjust their bin sizes and service levels for different pricing. Residents interested in switching their service levels can visit the city’s website at sandiego.gov/trash for further information regarding their eligibility and next steps.

“We want to thank the tens of thousands of San Diegans who have logged on to the portal so far and selected their bin size and number,” expressed Jeremy Bauer, assistant director for Environmental Services. “Creating an account empowers customers to track their service and fee history, receive text or email updates from the city, and manage future container needs.

“Even if you want the default size, it’s crucial to sign up to unlock those benefits. Establishing yourself as our customer also ensures you get the correct containers for your property right from the start of rollout.”

The online portal allows residents to create a unique account for their property. Property owners should expect to receive a mailer containing a unique code this week, particularly for those who may have misplaced earlier notifications sent out earlier this year.

In 2022, Measure B was proposed by then-Council President Elo-Rivera and Councilman Joe LaCava to enable the city to charge a fee for solid waste services, including collection, transport, disposal, recycling, and the cost of bins. The measure also mandates that short-term vacation rentals, accessory dwelling units, and
