On October 3, 2025, Chef Kathy Fang, known for her culinary excellence as the owner of Fang Restaurant and House of Nanking, announced an exciting new collaboration with Hoopes Vineyard, marking a unique one-of-a-kind tasting experience.
This event, set to take place on October 11, 2025, at COOP, Hoopes’ new creative gathering space located in Napa Valley, aims to celebrate two family legacies steeped in storytelling, heritage, and craftsmanship, coinciding with the release of Kathy’s recent cookbook, “House of Nanking: Family Recipes from San Francisco’s Favorite Chinese Restaurant,” which she co-authored with her father, Peter Fang.
From 11 am to 3 pm, attendees can enjoy an exclusive wine tasting experience featuring shareable bites inspired by the cookbook. The menu will highlight dishes such as iconic Nanking Chicken Dumplings accompanied by the restaurant’s signature peanut sauce and soy-pickled jalapeño, charred broccoli in secret sauce, and Sichuan Mapo Tofu with hot Italian sausage served over steamed jasmine rice topped with fried shallots and herbs.
Each dish reflects the Fang family’s rich Shanghai-Cantonese heritage and the seasonal bounty of California’s fresh ingredients.
During the event, Chef Kathy Fang will personally engage with guests, answer questions regarding her cookbook, and share personal insights about the stories and inspirations behind the dishes.
Additionally, participants will have an opportunity to purchase a “Book + Tasting Bundle,” which includes a copy of the House of Nanking cookbook, select Hoopes wines, and recipe pairings for recreating the culinary experience at home.
“As a chef who tells stories through food, it’s incredibly meaningful to partner with a winery that shares the same reverence for legacy, land, and cultural identity,” remarked Kathy Fang. “This event is about more than pairing dishes and wine – It’s about honoring where we come from and how we continue to grow.”
The story of the Fang family began in San Francisco’s Chinatown when Peter Fang opened House of Nanking in 1988. He transformed Chinese dining in the U.S. by honoring his Shanghai roots and utilizing California’s seasonal ingredients, gaining a loyal following through bold flavors and warm hospitality. Growing up in that environment, Kathy Fang went on to establish her own culinary identity, becoming a two-time Chopped champion, a Food Network Star, and co-founding Fang Restaurant.
The release of their cookbook serves as a tribute to the strong culinary bond between Kathy and her father and narrates the immigrant journey that has shaped their family’s narrative.
Hoopes Vineyard has a parallel legacy that emphasizes generational journeys and entrepreneurship. Spencer Hoopes, known for his quiet vision and passion for farming, established roots in Napa Valley in the early 1980s, carving out a name as a respected grower in Oakville.
Following a family health crisis, his daughter, Lindsay Hoopes, stepped into her role, ultimately transforming the vineyard into a regenerative estate recognized today as The Oasis by Hoopes. Combining her legal background with a profound respect for the land, Lindsay reimagined the family business by incorporating organic practices, diversifying their offerings, and passionately advocating for small wine producers in a shifting Napa landscape.
This collaboration between Chef Kathy Fang and Lindsay Hoopes goes beyond a simple culinary event; it embodies a celebration of generational entrepreneurship, resilience in the face of adversity, and the significant contributions of women carrying forward their fathers’ visions in bold and innovative directions.
