Embrace August with Fun Events in Anchorage

As the back-to-school season approaches, Anchorage invites residents to embrace the joys of summer with a variety of exciting events this week.

One of the highlights includes the Pedal Party at Hive Mind Meadery on Thursday at 6 p.m. Participants are encouraged to wear helmets and high-visibility clothing as they cycle to Onsite Brewing.

On Friday, Begich Middle School will host the Back to School Jam from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., providing students with free backpacks filled with essential school supplies. Organized by the Alaska Coalition of BIPOC Educators in collaboration with the Anchorage School District, attendees can enjoy complimentary hot dogs, chips, and drinks, making it a great event for families.

Saturday features a unique camping experience with Black Birch Books, where attendees can join a bookstore camping trip starting at noon. Located at South Rolly Lake in Nancy Lake State Recreation Area, this sober event welcomes all ages and encourages participants to bring their own camping gear, food, and firewood, with carpooling recommended.

This week also marks the First Friday celebrations in Anchorage, allowing free access to the Anchorage Museum from 6 to 9 p.m. Highlighted by a gallery talk on Athabascan cultural belongings at various times and a planetarium show, the evening promises cultural enrichment. Additionally, local artists will showcase their work at Stephan Fine Arts from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., accompanied by live music.

For those looking for a musical weekend activity, Salmonfest kicks off at the Kenai Peninsula Fair Grounds in Ninilchik starting Friday. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, this three-day festival boasts a lineup featuring The Revivalists and Elle King, with ticket prices varying based on the day. Families can bring children aged six and under for free, while tickets for kids ages six to twelve cost $40. Though limited camping is available, attendees can find numerous nearby camping options throughout the area.

On Saturday, Ravens Ring Brewing Company will host the Shorty Forty Derby Mashup, where the Stouts (Alaska’s shortest skaters) face off against the TallBoys (the tallest skaters) beginning at 3 p.m. This all-ages outdoor event promises excitement with live music, a beer garden, and food trucks. Tickets at only $5 will help fund the brewery’s new 40 oz bottling machine, making it a great way to enjoy a fun day while supporting a local business.

Lastly, the Integrated Resilience Office, in conjunction with the Red Cross and a library on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, will be hosting a free Kids’ Safety Workshop. Aimed at elementary-aged students, the workshop will cover important safety measures during disasters, equip children with coping skills to manage stress, and explore the science behind emergency preparedness. Parents are encouraged to sign their children up for this valuable learning experience.

With a mix of cycling, camping, cultural events, music, and safety workshops, Anchorage offers a vibrant start to August for families and individuals alike. Whether participating in local festivals or engaging in community-driven initiatives, there are plenty of opportunities to make lasting summer memories before the school year begins.
