Portland Weather Update and Local News Highlights

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) – The weather in Portland looks promising as we head into a stretch of lovely summer days.

A slight increase in temperature is expected tomorrow afternoon, but overall, this week presents few complaints on the weather front.

Meanwhile, the Burdoin Fire continues to pose challenges along the Columbia River, prompting several recreation sites within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to close.

Oregon Department of Emergency Management has shared tips on preparedness for anyone traveling near active wildfires this season.

In city news, a dramatic incident unfolded near Mall 205 yesterday.

Portland Police responded to reports of a man armed with a hatchet and knife confronting a security guard before fleeing into a nearby store.

Crisis negotiators were able to convince the man to surrender, leading to his eventual arrest.

On a separate note, Portland Police arrested a 17-year-old on Sunday after he was found driving a stolen vehicle.

The teenager attempted to evade capture by ramming his car into police vehicles repeatedly but was taken into custody and is now facing charges related to robbery and firearms.

The situation in Columbia County escalated on Sunday when an armed suspect lost control of his vehicle during a high-speed chase.

This chase followed a previous incident involving Washington State Police.

As the suspect’s vehicle careened into an embankment, an encounter with Oregon State Police resulted in shots fired, culminating in the suspect’s death at the scene.

Thankfully, no officers were injured during this tense standoff.

In a recent investigation, FOX 12 exposed a loophole in the City of Portland’s contract with local towing companies.

This loophole allows these companies to charge varying fees for certain calls, despite the City having standardized rates for most towing services.

In community news, the Albina Library has recently undergone a remodel, with the Hollywood branch set for renovation starting today.

Staff discussed exciting changes coming to the Hollywood Library, including the removal of the local Beverly Cleary map, with plans to reopen this winter.

In a positive development for the local arts community, the Pickathon Music Festival showcased a new stage built by students.

This initiative, known as Building to Scale, is a collaboration between Pickathon, local architects, builders, and nonprofits, providing hands-on experience to students.

After the festival, it is planned that parts of the stage will be recycled for community shelters and spaces.

In case you missed it, legendary musician Barry Manilow performed what he declared to be his final concert in Portland.

During his visit, Manilow awarded a $10,000 grant to a local music teacher as part of his Manilow Music Project, which aims to support underfunded music programs in schools.

Lastly, don’t miss the grand opening of Portland Dream Plaza tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This community center and skate park, a result of collaboration between Dream Big City and PBOT, will be open to the public every Tuesday into the fall season.
