Bourbon & Banter Makes Historic Hotels of America’s Top 25 Most Historic Bars List

Bourbon & Banter, a speakeasy located in downtown Dallas, has achieved national recognition by being included in Historic Hotels of America’s inaugural list of the Top 25 Most Historic Bars, Taverns, and Speakeasies.

This hidden cocktail lounge, situated beneath The Statler, is the only North Texas venue to be honored in this prestigious list, coming with a rich historical backdrop that dates back to its midcentury roots.

Once a barbershop where guests and celebrities of the 1950s and ’60s came for grooming before events, Bourbon & Banter is more than a trendy cocktail spot with a secret entry.

The transformation of this subterranean space into a speakeasy-style lounge occurred during the major restoration of The Statler, which reopened in 2017.

The entrance to Bourbon & Banter is in keeping with the speakeasy tradition of secrecy.

Guests must locate a vintage 1950s phone booth and shoeshine stand, where they dial a secret code to gain access.

Upon entering, patrons are greeted by decor that includes Old Hollywood photographs, historic news clippings, and an image of The Statler from 1956, when it first welcomed guests.

The cocktail menu reflects the venue’s historical inspiration, featuring unique drinks such as the Porto Old Fashioned, crafted with Basil Hayden Dark Rye, Sagamore Small Batch Rye, port wine reduction, and chocolate and orange bitters.

In addition, the Barrel-Aged Manhattan offers a sophisticated mix made from WhistlePig Piggyback Rye and a house vermouth blend.

To enhance the experience, live jazz performances fill the air every Thursday, while select Wednesdays showcase comedy events.

Bourbon & Banter opens its doors nightly at 7 p.m. and is available for private events, but it’s important to remember that reservations are required to secure the entry code.

The Statler, which houses Bourbon & Banter, is a significant symbol of Dallas’ growth and development since opening in 1956.

Joining Historic Hotels of America in 2018 further established its reputation as a site of cultural and architectural significance.

The recent renovations have rejuvenated the hotel while successfully preserving the midcentury aesthetic synonymous with its original design.

Bourbon & Banter is now part of a diverse collection of historic bars recognized by Historic Hotels of America.

The list includes renowned venues like the Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, which has been a local mainstay since 1886, and the legendary tiki bar, the Tonga Room, located at the Fairmont San Francisco, dating back to 1907.

Some of the bars on the list, such as The Cave at Omni Mount Washington in New Hampshire, predate Prohibition and have allowed guests to enjoy drinks in spaces rich with historical context.

While most bars included on the list opened post-Prohibition in 1933, they boast unique architectural qualities and cultural histories that enhance guests’ experiences.

According to Lawrence Horwitz, executive vice president of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide, these historic settings have either been preserved or creatively reinvented, making them authentic destinations where culture-minded travelers can unwind and enjoy an evening off.

Each establishment on the list embodies the history of its community, accompanied by exceptional hospitality and expertly crafted beverages.
