Flossmoor and Homewood Community Events and Meetings: Week of August 11-17

This week, the Flossmoor Public Art Commission will convene for a meeting on Monday, August 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the village hall located at 2800 Flossmoor Road. The agenda for the meeting has been made available for public viewing.

Also on Monday, the Homewood School District 153 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. in the media center at James Hart School, located at 18220 Morgan St. A key highlight on the agenda includes a presentation focusing on improvement plans for Willow and Churchill schools.

On Tuesday, August 12, the Homewood Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. in the village hall at 2020 Chestnut Road. This meeting will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person. Members of the community can access the livestream with the Meeting ID 980 4907 6232 and passcode 830183.

One key discussion topic is the continuation of the public hearing concerning the proposed Harwood TIF District, set to remain open until February 10, 2026. Additionally, the board will consider a Class 8 property tax relief designation for the property located at 17911 Harwood Ave.

Later in the week, the Homewood Planning and Zoning Commission will conduct a meeting on Thursday, August 14, at 7 p.m. Once again, this will take place at the village hall, and interested parties can participate via livestream with Meeting ID 991 8481 1606 and passcode 573812.

A significant item on their agenda includes the review of a site plan for the Tequila Raizes Restaurant, to be located at 18136 Dixie Highway.

Meanwhile, the Flossmoor Streetscape Project continues to evolve, with D Construction having completed the removal of curbs and sidewalks in several areas, including the west side of Park Drive and Sterling Avenue, as well as both sides of Central Drive and the north side of Flossmoor Road. The company has also installed new curbs in these locations. Residents are advised to be mindful of uneven sidewalk and pavement areas in the downtown area.

In the upcoming week, completion efforts for new planters and sidewalks will also take place in these same locations.

For community members looking for activities this week, the calendar is filled with options. On Monday, August 11, Dr. Jamil Kendall will lead a discussion on hip and knee replacements at the Homewood Public Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This program is being offered as part of a partnership with Advocate Aurora Health, and individuals interested in attending should register in advance.

Dog owners can join the Trail Hounds dog walking group on the same evening at 7 p.m. in Indian Trails Park, located at Willow and Riegel Roads in Homewood. This event is welcoming to all friendly on-leash dogs of any size or breed, and participation is free of charge.

On Tuesday, August 12, the Flossmoor Public Library will host a ‘Storytime in the Park’ event from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at Leavitt Park, located at 1010 Leavitt Ave. Registration is necessary for participation.

Simultaneously, the Homewood Public Library will offer a similar park storytime event from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Orchard Park, located at 1655 Olive Road.

Later that evening at 6:30 p.m., the Flossmoor Community Church will host ‘Homewood Stories’ at its Community House located at 947 Hutchison Road. Storytellers, including Victoria Reeves, Wayne Lerner, Susan Rohde, and Clarence Sonny Hogan, will share narratives, with host Paul Teodo. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the show is set to commence at 7:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring their own food and beverages, and for more details, they may contact Giggy Wagner at the provided email. Admission is $15 and is cash-only.

On August 13, the Homewood Public Library will hold a screening of the beloved film “Matilda” from 6 to 8 p.m. This event is part of the library’s Summer Movie Night series; attendees are welcome to bring snacks.

The excitement continues on Thursday, August 14, with the live performance of “Matilda the Musical” starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Drama Group theater at 330 202nd St. in Chicago Heights. Tickets are available for purchase at $25 for adults, $23 for seniors and military personnel, and $19 for students. Interested attendees can buy tickets through BookTix Ticketing, although an additional fee may apply for online purchases. Reservations can also be made by contacting the Drama Group box office.

The musical will be performed again on Friday, August 15, with the same pricing and timing for attendees. Following this, there will be two showings on Saturday, August 16, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the same venue.

On Saturday, the NAACP Far South Side Branch will conduct a general membership meeting at the Homewood Public Library from noon to 1 p.m., which will be followed by a meet and greet from 1 to 3 p.m. This event will offer voter registration opportunities, and refreshments will be provided.

Additionally, the Homewood Outdoor Farmers Market will be operating from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Martin Square along Martin Avenue, between Chestnut and Ridge Roads. Visitors can expect an array of offerings, including fresh produce, baked goods, handcrafted jewelry, and skincare items, with food trucks providing ready-to-eat meals. Notably, Liz Smith of Serendipity Yoga will lead a free yoga session for kids from 11 to 11:45 a.m., welcoming children of all ages to join in the fun.

Science enthusiasts can partake in STEM Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Homewood Science Center, located at 18022 Dixie Highway.

Cycling enthusiasts can join the Barb & Dan’s Road Ride, which departs at 8 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, located at 2125 183rd St. This ride is suitable for all experience levels, featuring a no-drop group typically riding around 20 miles. Stronger riders are known to venture further.

Lastly, an off-leash ride will take place at 8:30 a.m. from GoodSpeed Cycles, covering a leisurely nine-mile route, ending back at the shop around 9:45 a.m. for some delicious donuts.

To wrap up the week, on Sunday, August 17, another performance of “Matilda the Musical” will be held at 2 p.m. at the Drama Group theater. Tickets can be purchased as mentioned earlier.

Additionally, Gaia’s Market & Refillery will host a free clothing swap event from noon to 4 p.m., encouraging community members to bring in clothing for all ages and styles in wearable condition, enabling them to take home something new.

In terms of upcoming events, starting Monday, August 18, the Irons Oaks Foundation will begin taking orders for its annual Mum and Shrub Sale. Orders will be accepted through September 15, with plant pickups scheduled for September 23 at the Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, located at 20000 Western Ave.

On Friday, August 22, Trail Mix Productions will present its next Roots Music Series concert featuring the Hackensaw Boys, with Brice Clark as the opening act, at Izaak Walton Preserve on 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood. Tickets are currently available for this event.

Looking ahead to Saturday, August 23, a back-to-school party will take place, co-hosted by Homewood School District 153 and the Village of Homewood, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the village hall. This family-friendly event will include interactive games, music, food trucks, a rock climbing wall, and much more.

The following week, on Friday, August 29, the Flossmoor Park will host a Back-to-School Bash from 4 to 6 p.m. This celebration will offer community resource connections for families, and both kids and adults will enjoy treats from local food vendors while exploring different informational tables hosted by multiple local organizations. It will also feature the return of the popular Spirit Wear Swap, in collaboration with the Flossmoor Library and Flossmoor Green Commission.

Finally, as September approaches, the community is encouraged to mark their calendars for the Pups at the Pad event, scheduled for Friday, September 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the H-F Park District Splash Pad, located at Millennium Park, 18600 Harwood Ave. in Homewood. This off-leash event provides a joyful opportunity for dogs and their owners to enjoy some water fun together.

Those interested in literature can join the first session of the Books Without Borders community book club on Thursday, September 11, to discuss “So You Want to Talk about Race” by Ijeoma Oluo at The Rock Shop, starting at 6:45 p.m.

On Thursday, September 25, the League of Women Voters Homewood Flossmoor Area will host a Legislative Write-In event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Irwin Park Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood. This gathering will focus on food, fellowship, and writing letters to legislators about pressing issues. Tickets for this event are priced at $40 per person.

Whether attending meetings, participating in community activities, or enjoying performances, residents of Flossmoor and Homewood have numerous opportunities to engage and connect this week.
