Bay Area Cities Shine in Condé Nast Traveler’s Annual Readers’ Choice Awards

Two cities from the Bay Area have been recognized as top travel destinations in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler in its 38th annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

In the rankings for the best big cities, San Francisco has proudly secured the #2 spot, having moved up from last year when it was ranked #5.

The magazine highlighted the city’s famous landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, while also shining a light on its rich arts and culture scene.

Additionally, the city offers ample opportunities for self-care and proximity to nature, with selections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and exploring the street art in the vibrant Mission District.

Travelers are invited to pamper themselves at the numerous spas or venture north to witness the stunning redwoods in Muir Woods.

Condé Nast also praised San Francisco’s diverse culinary scene, claiming it boasts some of the best restaurants and bars globally, catering to various tourist preferences and ensuring a memorable experience.

In reaction to the recognition, Mayor Daniel Lurie of San Francisco celebrated the city’s achievements, stating, “The world knows what we know: San Francisco is a beautiful, dynamic city with some of the best art, culture, and restaurants in the world.”

He expressed ambitions to reach the #1 position in the future, saying, “Next stop: No. 1!”

Meanwhile, in the category of best small cities, Oakland made a noteworthy appearance, coming in at #7.

The publication highlighted the city’s diverse African-American culture, calling it “a microcosm of Black life in America.”

Condé Nast Traveler emphasized the historical significance of the African-American community in Oakland, noting their migration between 1940 and 1970, which transformed the landscape of the city.

The availability of blue-collar jobs mainly in the transportation sector helped many in this community ascend to the middle class, inevitably shaping Oakland’s unique identity.

The report praised the rich cultural tapestry of the city, including music genres and vibrant street dancing, all part of what makes Oakland special today.

The publication noted that while Oakland has faced challenges over the years, it remains a city that honors its history and community, evident in local business owners who have passed down their storefronts across generations.

Additionally, the unique dance and music style known as TURFing can only be experienced in Oakland, further enhancing its cultural offerings.

Furthermore, the city’s temperate climate was cited as one of its appealing features, with Oakland being placed on the sunnier side of the San Francisco Bay.

Oakland’s Mayor, Barbara Lee, expressed her pride in the recognition, noting that it reflects the strength and resilience of the residents.

She acknowledged that while some narratives focus on the challenges the city faces, it is vital to celebrate the community’s achievements and vibrant identity.

In a statement to KTVU, she underscored, “We are defined by our genius, our grit, and our grace. To every resident who makes Oakland home – this recognition belongs to you.”

She confidently stated that Oakland is on the move and that community pride is palpable.

Visit Oakland, a private, non-profit tourism group, also celebrated this accolade from Condé Nast Traveler, emphasizing the city’s appeal as a travel destination.

Visit Oakland President & CEO Peter Gamez remarked, “Being voted one of the Top 10 Best Small Cities in the U.S. by Condé Nast Traveler Readers reinforces that Oakland is a destination with so much to offer all who visit.”

He emphasized that this recognition amplifies Oakland’s rich cultural history while showcasing its enticing location, vibrant arts, and culinary offerings.

These recent accolades come as a positive development for the Bay Area, particularly following the setbacks in tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rankings reveal that both San Francisco and Oakland are making significant impressions in the travel world as places worth visiting.

In the complete rankings, Chicago holds the title of the best large city, followed by San Francisco, which has showcased its resilience and popularity among travelers.

In comparison, the small cities category is led by Charleston, S.C., with Oakland taking a respectable #7 position.

This year’s recognition highlights not only the beauty and appeal of these cities but also their cultural richness and community spirit, making them prime locations for travelers seeking unique experiences in California.

As both cities continue to evolve, they embody the spirit of innovation and diversity that defines the Bay Area, ensuring continued interest from visitors eager to explore their exceptional offerings.
