Cultural Highlights in Chicago: Theatre, Dance, Music, and Festivals This August

Chicago is buzzing with a variety of artistic events this August, featuring engaging theatre productions, vibrant dance performances, exhilarating musical acts, and festive community gatherings.

One of the standout theatre productions this month is David Hein and Irene Sankoff’s musical ‘Come From Away,’ which tells the remarkable true story of nearly 7,000 airline passengers who were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001. The local citizens welcomed these stranded travelers with open arms. Under the direction of Trent Stork, ‘Come From Away’ will run from August 20 to October 12 at the Paramount Theatre, located at 23 E. Galena in Aurora. Another thought-provoking piece is Sarah Ruhl’s ‘How to Transcend a Happy Marriage,’ directed by Elizabeth Swanson. This drama questions the boundaries of monogamy and the intricacies of friendship, a reflection of contemporary relationships. The show is scheduled from August 14 to September 21 at the Redtwist Theatre, 1044 W. Bryn Mawr, with tickets priced at $45.

For musical theatre enthusiasts, ‘Side by Side by Sondheim’ offers a showcase of Stephen Sondheim’s most iconic songs. Christina Ramirez directs this celebration of Sondheim’s work, which will take place from August 15 to September 14 at the Oil Lamp Theater, 1723 Glenview Rd. in Glenview. Tickets are available for $55.

Continuing the theme of representation in theatre is the fifth annual BIPOC Play Festival, which highlights one-act plays by Black, Indigenous, and other playwrights of color. This free event runs from August 15 to 24 at Perceptions Theatre, located at 1825 E. 79th.

Dancing takes center stage in the city as well, with ‘Dance for Life,’ an annual fundraiser for the Chicago Dance Health Fund. This event showcases performances from 10 local dance companies, including the Joffrey Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and is set to occur at The Auditorium, 50 E. Ida B. Music fans can look forward to an exciting lineup of concerts. Singer-actress Cynthia Erivo will grace the stage with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on August 15 at Ravinia, promoting her latest album ‘I Forgive You,’ which features 20 songs showcasing her diverse vocal capabilities. Tickets are priced at $59 and up.

Nine Inch Nails will embark on their ‘Peel It Back’ tour, featuring drummer Josh Freese and a mix of classics from their discography. The concert will take place at the United Center on August 19-20 at 7:30 p.m., with tickets starting at $61.

On August 17, iconic artists Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls will perform at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park at 6 p.m., with ticket prices starting at $95. Their rich and distinct musical styles promise a captivating evening for attendees.

Grammy-nominated band Hiatus Kaiyote will bring their eclectic sound to the Riviera Theatre on August 20 at 8 p.m. Their blend of funk, Latin jazz, neo-soul, and more is sure to create a memorable show. Tickets are available from $43.50 to $86.

The 70MM Film Festival continues at the Music Box Theatre, showcasing classic films like ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’ These screenings will run until August 21, with tickets priced at $15.

For family entertainment, the Chicago Air and Water Show is a must-see, featuring performances by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and other military teams. This annual event takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on August 16-17 along the lakefront, with North Avenue Beach as the focal point. Admission is free.

Fans of pop culture should not miss Fan Expo Chicago, where celebrities such as Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen will participate in autograph sessions and panel discussions. Scheduled for August 15 through 17 at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, tickets start at $40.

Lookingglass Theatre and The Actors Gymnasium will present ‘Ice Cream Circus,’ a unique tale told through dance and clowning. The performance will debut on August 17 at Gill Park, with additional shows at other city parks. Admission is also free for this delightful experience.

Art lovers can explore the Evanston Art & Big Fork Festival, showcasing 150 juried artists along with food trucks and children’s activities. This event takes place on August 16-17, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 16th and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 17th. Admission is free.

Also, the Little Italy Festa celebrates Italian culture through food, music, and performances. Scheduled from August 14 to 17, this festive gathering suggests a $10 donation for entry.

Finally, the Glenwood Avenue Arts Fest invites visitors to enjoy a diverse range of artistic expressions along with children’s art activities and live performances, occurring from August 15 to 17, and is free to the public.
