Grand Wailea Reopens as Kilolani Spa After Major Renovation

The Grand Wailea on Maui, a renowned Waldorf Astoria Resort, has recently undergone a significant transformation, reopening its doors with a new spa and enhanced facilities after a $55-million renovation.

For over two decades, the resort’s Spa Grande, celebrated for its blend of elegance and tranquility, attracted visitors and locals alike. Following its closure in 2019 for renovations, concerns arose about losing the beloved elements that made it special.

However, upon visiting the freshly rebranded Kilolani Spa, which debuted in early 2024, the ambiance and experiences have remained strikingly favorable.

At an expansive 50,000 square feet, Kilolani Spa now stands as the largest of its kind in Hawaii. This rejuvenated sanctuary features an impressive hydrotherapy garden with hot and cold plunge pools and a welcoming hammam. The spa’s treatments are deeply rooted in Hawaiian traditions, honoring the cycles of the moon, adding a unique layer to the spa experience.

The resort, under the leadership of managing director JP Oliver, has not only renovated its spa but revamped the entire property, which includes updated guest rooms and several new dining venues. While visitors may have to wait a short while for Nobu to open, the anticipation justifies a return visit for many.

The extensive renovation plans initiated in 2019 faced delays due to the pandemic, with construction commencing late 2020 and concluding in October 2024. Despite initial setbacks, demand surged post-pandemic, especially following the devastating wildfires in August 2023 that impacted tourism, but recovery is underway, with occupancy rates climbing back to near full capacity.

What remains unchanged at the Grand Wailea is its stunningly lush landscape and welcoming gardens. Guests can explore the vibrant 40-acre property, highlighted by a variety of native plants and the soothing sounds of cascading waterfalls. Art aficionados will find plenty to admire, with a significant collection of works including Fernando Botero sculptures and Fernand Léger paintings adorning public spaces throughout the resort.

The accommodations at Grand Wailea continue to impress, featuring 877 guest rooms, all with private lanais and views of either the lush gardens or ocean.

Each room includes modern amenities, from refrigerators to Nespresso machines, with luxurious bathrooms outfitted in soothing hues and beautiful art.

For those seeking ultimate indulgence, the three-bedroom villas in the Ho‘olei complex provide ample space, complete with full kitchens and stunning views.

Culinary offerings at the resort also aim to impress, with the signature restaurant Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa serving island-inspired dishes alongside an impressive breakfast buffet.

The recent opening of Nobu adds more excitement to the dining scene, offering guests a taste of renowned Japanese cuisine, while other venues cater to diverse palates with Italian-inspired menus, light bites, and even beachside dining.

Activities for all ages abound at the Grand Wailea, from morning yoga sessions on the beach to learning traditional Hawaiian crafts, ensuring guests have a memorable experience beyond lounging poolside.

The newly updated spa experience also prompts guests to engage in wellness rituals upon arrival, enhancing one’s senses through its hydrotherapy offerings alongside a robust treatment menu.

Among the new retreats offered are multi-day wellness programs that combine spa treatments with fitness sessions and dietary detox practices.

Families have not been overlooked, with revamped recreational options for children and teens that encourage explorative learning throughout the grounds.

Accessibility remains a key feature, along with a strong commitment to sustainability, which has been integral to the resort’s philosophy..

Set on Maui’s south side, with just a short drive from the airport, the Grand Wailea serves as an ideal base for exploring the natural and cultural wonders of Hawaii, from breathtaking volcano views to exquisite local dining.

For guests interested in booking, nightly rates begin at $700, with options for enhanced value through loyalty programs and special offers, reaffirming that the Grand Wailea continues to be a premier choice for travelers seeking both luxury and relaxation in paradise.
