The Bay Area’s food scene sees a slight slowdown this week after a flurry of recent openings and announcements. Here’s a roundup of the latest developments worth noting.
One noteworthy update is with JouJou, the eagerly anticipated French restaurant from the Lazy Bear team, which is situated in the Design District. Originally scheduled for a summer opening, Chef-owner David Barzelay informed SFist that the new target for opening is now set for sometime in the new year. More details are to be released soon.
JouJou will occupy the former Grove space at One Henry Adams Street. The restaurant aims to evoke classic brasserie ambiance, complete with high-end service, serving signature dishes like seafood towers, shrimp bisque, salmon almondine, and duck a l’orange.
In an exciting revival, Castagnola’s, historically the oldest continually operating restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf, is set to make its comeback after a significant pandemic-related closure. Following a settlement with the Port of SF, the restaurant is poised to open again, although specific details are yet to surface.
North Beach welcomed a new cocktail bar called Long Weekend, opened by the Future Bars team responsible for popular spots such as Local Edition, Bourbon & Branch, and the Dawn Club. Launched on Thursday, this bar will draw its inspiration from different global locations every nine months, with the inaugural theme focused on Havana, Cuba. Every aspect of the establishment—from the drink menu to music and decor—will reflect this Cuban influence, before transitioning to a new location theme in nine months. Reservations are encouraged, following the practice at Bourbon & Branch.
Delfina is set to continue its By-the-Glass takeover series this November by featuring Ettore Germano, a fourth-generation winery from Italy’s Piemonte region. On November 13, diners can indulge in a specially crafted a la carte dinner menu that features seasonal dishes from the Barolo area, with an optional pairing of white truffles. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy by-the-glass selections from Ettore Germano; reservations can be made online.
Another exciting development is the establishment of a brick-and-mortar location for Maillards, a smashburger pop-up that gained acclaim on the Chronicle’s best burgers list. Fans of Maillards will find it inside a newly established SF taproom by Two Pitchers Brewing Co. from Oakland, situated at 3821 Noriega Street in the Outer Sunset. This venue, set to open in the new year, will replace the former Noriega Produce market. Customers can anticipate a variety of Maillards’ famed smashed patties, crispy fries, and some innovative fermented sodas.
In this year’s commercial fishing sector, the Dungeness crab fishing season has again been delayed until the new year, aiming to ensure safer waters for migrating whales during the winter season. However, recreational Dungeness crab fishing can commence south of the Sonoma/Mendocino border starting November 1, potentially leading to local crab becoming available in stores.
Lastly, the annual Fall Restaurant Week, organized by the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, is taking place from November 1 to November 9. This event features a range of prix-fixe deals for lunch, brunch, and dinner at participating restaurants across the city. For a comprehensive list of the restaurants taking part, check the association’s official resources.
