City officials in Boston have taken a significant step in seeking transparency from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by formally filing a public records request. This action, initiated last Friday, aims to gather detailed information on ICE’s arrest and enforcement tactics within the city. Mayor Michelle Wu outlined this initiative during a press conference where she expressed her commitment to defending the rights of Boston residents against the actions of the Trump administration.
Mayor Wu’s plan entails a series of public records requests under the federal Freedom of Information Act, aimed at acquiring comprehensive documents related to immigration operations in Boston since President Trump took office on January 20. The request seeks critical information, including details about all arrests and deportations carried out by ICE, warrants, immigration detainer documents, and the identities of those arrested, regardless of whether they are the intended targets of enforcement actions.
At the press conference, Wu articulated her belief that the federal government fails to understand the needs and values of Boston residents. “We are taking every possible action here in our city to push back and to stand up for basic rights,” she stated, reinforcing her position as a champion for immigrant communities in the area.
