Tsunami Alerts Issued for U.S. West Coast Following Major Earthquake in Russia

A series of tsunami alerts has been issued for the U.S. West Coast, including Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and California, in response to a significant earthquake that occurred off the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia.

The earthquake struck at approximately 7:24 p.m. ET and was later upgraded to a magnitude of 8.8 by the United States Geological Survey.

In the wake of this seismic event, various tsunami watches, advisories, and warnings have been activated across the affected states.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has indicated that tsunami waves can travel across entire ocean basins and are among the most powerful natural forces known to man.

Forecasts for tsunami activity will commence in Alaska at 4:40 p.m. AKDT in Shemya, where potential maximum wave heights are expected to range from 3 feet to 5.6 feet.

Residents in Washington can expect forecasts to begin in La Push at 11:35 p.m. PT, with Moclips anticipating wave heights between 0.8 feet and 1.4 feet.

Oregon’s tsunami forecast is set to begin in Port Orford at 11:40 p.m. PT, predicting maximum wave heights between 1.1 feet and 2 feet, while Brookings may see wave heights from 1 foot to 1.8 feet.

California’s tsunami forecast will start at 11:50 p.m. PT at Fort Bragg, where Crescent City could experience waves reaching heights of 3.1 feet to 5.7 feet.

The NWS has made an accessible list of forecast times for several cities along the West Coast available on its website.

Hawaii is currently under a tsunami warning, with Honolulu’s alert system indicating that the first tsunami wave is expected to arrive at 7:17 p.m. HST on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

In response to the alerts, FEMA urged Hawaiian residents to evacuate to higher ground if instructed, providing additional safety tips on its website, Ready.gov.

President Donald Trump acknowledged the situation on Truth Social, confirming the tsunami warnings for Hawaii and watches for Alaska and the Pacific Coast, while advising the public to stay informed through tsunami.gov.

The director of National Intelligence and former Hawaiian Representative Tulsi Gabbard also emphasized the need for safety, urging individuals to heed warnings and take necessary precautions.

Meanwhile, storm chaser Colin McCarthy reported heavy traffic congestion in Honolulu as locals rushed to evacuate.

He noted that tsunami waves up to 12 feet are expected to impact the Hawaiian Islands as early as 7:10 p.m. HST.

Residents along the affected coastlines are being advised to steer clear of coastal areas and remain updated through reliable weather sources.

As the situation develops, authorities have urged everyone to stay vigilant and heed necessary safety measures while monitoring ongoing updates.
