United Airlines Announces Expansion on Denver to Anchorage Route for Summer 2026

In a strategic move to bolster its competitive edge, United Airlines (UA) has unveiled plans for a significant capacity increase on its Denver (DEN) to Anchorage (ANC) route, set to take effect during the summer of 2026.

The airline will ramp up its flight frequency to four daily departures, effectively doubling the current number of flights scheduled for summer 2025.

This expansion is particularly noteworthy as it positions United to directly challenge Southwest Airlines (WN), which is expected to begin operating on the same route.

The Denver to Anchorage connection, covering a distance of 2,090 nautical miles (3,871 kilometers), has been part of United’s schedule since 1994.

Historically, United operated as many as three daily flights during select peak periods from 2016 to 2018, but the planned service for 2026 represents the airline’s most extensive operation on this route to date.

According to updates from Simple Flying, the new summer schedule will see four daily flights operating from June 26 to August 10, 2026.

These flights will utilize the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, featuring a total of 166 seats, including 16 in domestic first class, 54 in Economy Plus, and 96 in standard economy.

This increase will elevate the Denver to Anchorage route to United’s seventh-longest narrowbody flight from its Denver hub, joining other popular destinations such as Lihue, Kahului, San Juan, and Punta Cana.

The new schedule outlines an initial phase starting with two daily flights from May 21 to June 25, 2026.

As demand surges during the peak summer season, the frequency will increase to four flights per day, with a gradual tapering back to three flights in late August and two flights in September.

The revised schedule will also introduce new flight times, including newly added departures from Denver at 07:45 and 16:00, while the existing 19:00 flight will shift to 20:20.

Simultaneously, Southwest Airlines plans to initiate its services from Denver at 18:50, returning at 23:20, setting the stage for increased competition in this corridor.

According to data from the US Department of Transportation from August 2024 to July 2025, United catered to approximately 125,400 round-trip passengers on the Denver to Anchorage route, achieving an impressive 81% load factor during this period.

Around 30% of these travelers were local passengers, while the remaining 70% were transit passengers connecting through Denver to other destinations.

The months of July and August emerged as the strongest periods, with each month exceeding 16,000 passengers.

However, with four daily flights scheduled for 2026, United may face the challenge of balancing fares and capacity to maintain profitability during peak times.

Current fare examples for early July 2026 indicate United is pricing its round-trip tickets around $732, in stark contrast to Southwest’s higher base fare that surpasses $1,100.

Industry analysts suggest that United’s expansion strategy is likely aimed at pressuring Southwest, and could lead to a reduction in flight frequencies to the traditional two daily flights once competition diminishes.

United’s Denver hub is recognized as one of the most competitive markets in the United States, alongside strong competitors such as Southwest and Frontier Airlines.

The initiative to expand service to Anchorage demonstrates United’s intent to both protect its hub dominance and capture the increasing summer leisure demand to Alaska.

Moreover, this service enhancement aligns with a broader industry trend in which US carriers are deploying narrowbody aircraft like the Boeing 737 MAX 8 on extended domestic and near-international routes, aimed at boosting operational efficiency and flexibility.
