The 5th Avenue Theatre Presents ‘After Midnight’: A Journey into Harlem’s Musical Heritage

The 5th Avenue Theatre is set to ignite the summer with its latest production, ‘After Midnight,’ a vibrant celebration of Harlem’s iconic Cotton Club and a tribute to the rich tapestry of music, poetry, and culture that flourished during the Harlem Renaissance.

Performances are scheduled to run through August 24, promising audiences an unforgettable experience.

Directed by Jay Santos, the Senior Director of Artistic Programming at The 5th Avenue Theatre, ‘After Midnight’ reimagines the traditional 1930s nightclub revue, infused with a contemporary twist through its captivating blend of song, dance, and storytelling.

Santos, who has previously taken the helm for productions such as ‘Spring Awakening,’ ‘Sweeney Todd,’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ believes that jazz is more than just music; it reflects survival, resistance, and poetry.

In this light, ‘After Midnight’ serves as more than a mere revue; it stands as a living mural that underscores the importance of recognizing Black Culture as integral to American cultural identity, particularly in a time when society is reevaluating whose voices are celebrated.

Leading the ensemble are Yusef Seevers and Porscha Shaw, a dynamic pair familiar to The 5th Avenue audiences from their performances in ‘Sweeney Todd,’ ‘Something’s Afoot,’ and ‘Waitress.’

The cast also includes talented performers such as Nalica Hennings, Nehemiah Hooks, Nicholas Japaul Bernard, Trina Mills, Madison Willis, Brian Davis, Iris Beaumier, and Jason Holley, each bringing unique flair and charisma to the stage.

External understudies, bringing additional depth and talent to the production, include Savannah Cooper, Alysha Morgan, Stanley Martin, and Lamont Brown.

Notably, select performances will feature special guests from Northwest Tap Connection, adding an extra layer of thrill to this already vibrant production.

The music of ‘After Midnight’ will be brought to life by a full band composed of Seattle’s top jazz artists.

Audiences can expect to enjoy classic tunes such as ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),’ ‘Stormy Weather,’ and ‘I’ve Got the World on a String.’

This talented group of musicians includes music director and conductor William Knowles, who will also play the keys; associate music director and substitute conductor Rebecca Smith; and a host of instrumentalists featuring Chris Patin on drums, Lamar Lofton on bass, and multiple reed players including Brian Bermudez and Alex Dugdale.

Additionally, Owuor Arunga and Nathan Breedlove will contribute their trumpet prowess, providing a rich harmonic backdrop to the performances.

The artistic team behind this production is equally impressive, with associate director Allyson Lee Brown and choreographer Pamela Yasutake leading a collaborative effort that includes scenic design by Carey Wong and lighting by Xavier Pierce.

The immersive atmosphere of an authentic nightclub is enhanced by an innovative set design featuring six cabaret tables.

These tables were designed by six visual artists who identify as Black or of the African Diaspora, with works created around the theme ‘Black Jubilee through Black Community.’

The artists, including Aramis O. Hamer and Susan Mask, depict rich narratives that reflect the vibrant culture and community of Harlem, providing an additional layer of depth to the performance experience.

With its captivating mix of music, dance, and stunning visuals, ‘After Midnight’ not only pays homage to the legacies of Black excellence but also invites both seasoned jazz aficionados and newcomers alike to explore the artistry that defined an iconic era.

This dazzling production is poised to become a highlight of the summer season, encouraging audiences to experiences the hypnotic rhythms and emotional stories of a time when jazz ruled the night.

With soul-stirring music, exquisite choreography, and eye-catching design, ‘After Midnight’ promises to be an electrifying theatrical experience that resonates long after the curtain falls.

As the anticipation builds, The 5th Avenue Theatre is ready to transport audiences to the heart of Harlem, celebrating the rich legacy and vibrant spirit of an unforgettable musical era.
