Celebrating 50 Years of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with Live Screenings Across Florida

As Halloween approaches, fanfare builds for a significant milestone in cinematic history: the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

This cult classic, which originally premiered as a London musical in 1973, has made an enduring impact on audiences worldwide since its film adaptation hit theaters in 1975.

With unforgettable performances, colorful characters, and a soundtrack that resonates to this day, Rocky Horror holds the record for the longest-running film in cinema history, as noted by media scholar Jeffery Weinstock.

Directed by Richard O’Brien, the film combines sci-fi, horror, and musical elements in a narrative that many critics found nonsensical at the time.

The story follows the recently engaged couple, Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), whose flat tire leads them to the mysterious lair of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist whose thrilling eccentricities alter their lives forever.

Despite its rocky start at the box office and its lack of Oscar nominations, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has developed a fiercely loyal fanbase over the decades.

Its themes of acceptance and self-exploration have made it a sanctuary for individuals seeking understanding of their identities and attractions, encapsulated perfectly in the line, “Don’t dream it, be it.”

Barry Bostwick recently shared insights into the film’s legacy, stating in a 2023 New Times interview, “To me, it’s a real period piece… but what it really is now is an alternate way to spend your time. I don’t think people are going to it to take away the message of inclusion or self-exploration. I think it’s just going to hit people in their hearts.”

To celebrate this golden jubilee, theaters across Florida are gearing up to host special screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, featuring live shadow casts, costume contests, and other interactive elements adored by longtime fans and newcomers alike.

In Pinecrest, theatergoers can indulge in the festivities at Pinecrest Gardens, which kicks off its anniversary celebration on Friday, October 3.

Attendees can expect a live shadow cast performance of characters like Magenta, Brad, Janet, and Dr. Frank-N-Furter alongside a screening of the film.

Costumes are highly encouraged, with a contest offering a $100 reward for the winner.

Regular admission is $15, while VIP tickets at $45 include a meet-and-greet with the cast, a signature drink, popcorn, and preferred seating.

On Saturday, October 11, the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach will host a special event featuring original cast members Barry Bostwick, Nell Campbell (Columbia), and Patricia Quinn (Magenta).

The event will showcase the unedited version of the film, along with a live shadow cast performance, memorabilia displays, and a costume contest.

VIP packages are also available, allowing fans to enjoy prime seating and meet-and-greet opportunities with the actors, as well as exclusive photos and autographs.

Coral Gables Art Cinema will contribute to the celebrations with double showings on Saturday, October 25.

The screenings will include a live performance from “The Faithful Handymen,” the longest-running shadow cast in South Florida, along with complimentary prop bags for audience participation during pivotal moments of the film.

For those in Miami Beach, O Cinema will host its thirteenth edition of the Rocky Horror event at the Miami Beach Bandshell on Saturday, October 27.

In true Rocky Horror fashion, attendees are encouraged to shout, sing, and quote along with the film.

An exclusive “Virgin Kit Prop Bag” will be distributed to early arrivals, and the event will feature a costume parade and the beloved tradition of a “virgin sacrifice” to welcome newcomers.

On Halloween night, fans can revel in the spirit of the film at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

Costumes are welcomed, and the venue will offer prop bags for sale in the lobby to enhance the interactive experience.

Moreover, the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center in Davie will also hold a Halloween screening on the same evening, allowing audiences another chance to celebrate the beloved cult classic.

With tickets ranging from $15 to $309, the celebrations for The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s 50th anniversary promise to be a significant event, filled with laughter, music, and a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Whether you’re a devoted veteran or a newcomer eager to lose your Rocky Horror virginity, now is the time to prepare for a night of thrilling entertainment that showcases the enduring legacy of this iconic film.
