Exciting Events Highlight August in Hawai‘i

August in Hawai‘i is bursting with exciting events that cater to both residents and visitors alike.

The Kāne‘ohe Bay Air Show kicks off on August 8, offering a unique experience for active and retired military service members, DoD civilian employees, and their families from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On the following weekend, the event opens its doors to the public, allowing anyone to witness thrilling aerial performances by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, among other acts, throughout Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Alongside stunning aerial displays, attendees can enjoy parachute performances, an F-22 Raptor team, and live music from the MarForPac Band. There will also be various food vendors, exhibitor booths, and educational activities for children, making it a family-friendly event. In Kaka‘ako, the Ten & Sen Pop-Up runs through August 24, offering a selection of artisan-made Japanese goods.

Open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays, this limited-time boutique at The Rice Factory features a captivating collection that includes Bizen ware ceramics, Hariko papier-mâché tigers, Marugame Uchiwa fans, and charming chopstick rests. For those interested in surfing culture, the “Meet the Legends: Eddie Aikau Big Wave Photo Exhibit” takes place on August 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay.

This speaker series event will feature captivating stories behind stunning surf photographs taken by talented photographers such as Mike Ito and Christa Funk. All proceeds from prints sold will go to the Eddie Aikau Foundation. Guests can also enjoy a cocktail hour featuring music by big wave surfer DJ Keala Kennelly. Admission is free, making this event accessible to all.

Another significant event is the “Kanikapila o Mahina” on August 9 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Waikalua Loko I‘a, an ancient Hawaiian fishpond.

This outdoor picnic will showcase live music performances, from taiko drums to an African dance band and the Tommy James Quintet. Attendees can also indulge in delicious Hawaiian food for purchase and enjoy complimentary pond tours. Ticket prices are $45 if purchased online or $50 at the door, while children can attend for free. Proceeds will support the Pacific American Foundation’s educational programs and the restoration of the pond.

Beginning August 12 and running every day through February 2026, visitors are invited to the new exhibit “White Flash, Black Rain” at the Battleship Missouri Memorial.

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this exhibit features rare artifacts on loan from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. An original origami crane created by Sadako Sasaki, a young victim of the Hiroshima bombing, will be on display.
