This week, various ceremonies and events are taking place across metro Atlanta and North Georgia to honor and remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
The events include memorial rides, candlelight vigils, stair climbs, and ceremonies attended by local officials and community members. Each event serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and the bravery displayed during the tragic events of that day.
In Bartow County, community members can participate in the 9/11 Memorial Ride and Concert on September 13 at 9 a.m. The annual ride begins at Southern Devil Harley Davidson in Cartersville and recognizes the sacrifices of those lost on 9/11, as well as local law enforcement officers and firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
In Stockbridge, Clayton County will host a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on September 11 at 8 a.m. This public event at Stockbridge City Hall will include local schools and first responders and aims to memorialize the victims of the September 11 attacks.
Cobb County will participate in honoring the fallen heroes with its annual 9/11 Marathon Stair Climb at Callaway Stadium. This event, taking place at 7:30 a.m. on September 11, includes climbing the equivalent of 110 stories to pay tribute to the Fire Department of New York heroes. Proceeds will benefit the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund of Georgia, and registration includes a commemorative t-shirt.
Coweta County’s Annual 9/11 Candlelight Vigil is set for 6:55 p.m. on September 11 at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Newnan. The vigil will feature a performance of “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning” by Trevor Meadows.
DeKalb County has planned a couple of significant observances. The 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Dewey C. Brown Plaza in Avondale Estates, featuring a bell ringing at 8:46 a.m., marking the moment the first tower was struck, along with a period of silent reflection. Later in the day, at 6 p.m., the Scott Candler Library in Decatur will screen the PBS documentary “9/11: Inside the Pentagon.”
Fayette County invites community members to the 9/11 Memorial Walk in Peachtree City at 9 a.m. on September 11. This solemn four-mile walk around Lake Peachtree will be led by participants in full firefighting turnout gear to honor both victims and first responders.
In Fulton County, residents can join the 9/11 Memorial Step Climb at Chastain Park Amphitheater from 5 to 8 p.m. on September 11. This event opens the amphitheater to the public for a step-climbing tribute to the victims of 9/11.
Additionally, on September 10, Fulton County will present the Beyond the Call of Duty: 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, highlighting the courage of first responders. This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 3900 Aviation Circle in Atlanta, where city leaders, police, firefighters, and community members will gather to commemorate those lost and recognize heroic acts of officers.
The Patriot Day Annual 9/11 Commemoration is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on September 11 in Johns Creek at Newton Park, where donations will be accepted for the Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation. In Roswell, city officials and community members will gather at 8:30 a.m. at Roswell City Hall to honor those who died on 9/11 during the 9/11 Commemorative Ceremony.
The 9/11 Heroes Run 5K on September 13 in Grant Park, Atlanta, invites participants of all fitness levels to run or ruck in honor of the heroes from that fateful day, with registration required.
Gwinnett County residents are invited to the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Betty Mauldin Park in Norcross at 8:15 a.m. on September 11, where a tribute will include bagpipes and a bell-ringing to mark the moment the first tower was struck.
Henry County will host its own 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 11 a.m. in McDonough at Jason T. Harper Arena, a solemn event to honor the heroes, victims, and families affected by 9/11.
Finally, Paulding County will conduct the Remembering the Heroes Ceremony at 8:40 a.m. on September 11 at the 9/11 Memorial Site in Mt. Tabor Park, led by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department Honor Guards, along with guest representatives from New York law enforcement.
As these communities come together to remember and honor the sacrifices made, their collective spirit serves as a testament to resilience and unity in the face of tragedy.
