Proposed Bike Lane on West Alabama Street Abandoned Amidst Controversial Transportation Policies

The planned bike lane along West Alabama Street in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood will not be constructed, reflecting the transportation policies of Mayor John Whitmire’s administration that appear to favor car infrastructure over cycling amenities.

Engineer Muhammad Ali of HR Green, the firm tasked with the redesign, remarked on the changing landscape of the administration’s approach towards roadway design.

Ali explained that the 1.6-mile West Alabama Street reconstruction project, which runs from Shepherd Drive to Spur 527, will include repaving, enhanced drainage, wider sidewalks, new street lighting, and traffic signals—yet will not accommodate the previously proposed bike lane.
